Kid's Christmas Program - Follow Up
Great Job kids and thank you so much for bringing your best not only to the singing and acting but bringing your best to the important message that you were sharing here this morning.
If we haven’t met yet, along with delivering donuts I am the Pastor here at Friendship Church and I wanted to take just a moment before we start getting prepared for the brunch to double down on some of what the kids shared with us this morning.
I love how the script this year followed the quest of the wise men who for most of their journey followed a star right up until they found themselves in the throne room of “Herod the Great” asking, “Where is the one born King of Jews”.
Have you ever thought about how that would have been received. Here are these men traveling from far away just walk into the throne room and asked the one sitting on the throne...”Hey, um where is the new King?” Not exactly the most diplomatic move on their part, right?
But that was the extent of their dedication to their quest. They had been sent to worship and honor this new King who has arrived at a time when there was already a King sitting on the throne.
I think there is something in this part of the Christmas story for each one of us to consider. You see that baby born in the manger was not only the King of the Jews, but the “King of Kings” God himself come to earth in the flesh. And we should be just as concerned as “Sherlock Watson” over what our “source” the Word of God says about who Jesus is.
Because Jesus did not come here to be our “genie in a lamp” or our “cosmic vending machine” to get whatever we ask when we pray for it. He didn’t come to serve us in a subservient way. He was born King.
And this poses a problem, because if we are honest, we really all want to be our own King. We all want to be the one who sits on the throne of our lives and see others come in line with our plans, our desires our happiness. I mean, if I can get God to get on “Team Dan” then great but otherwise…don’t get in my way.
You see the arrival a new King always causes a problem for the one who is already sitting on the throne.
But the King of Kings doesn’t invade our lives demanding our allegiance through force, like an earthly King would. Instead, the Bible says that while we were still rebelling against God as King, He sent His own son Jesus to take on flesh, live a perfect life and then die a horrible death in our place so that we could live an incredible life in the Kingdom of God. That is how the King of Kings dealt with this “clash of Kingdoms”. He didn’t send his power to crush us, He sent his Son to save us.
The Bible says in...Romans 5:88 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
and in the famous John 3:16–18
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
You see from our very beginning we each have had something like “a little Herod” inside of us. For selfish purposes we may want to seek something of this baby born in a manger, but the question to ask ourselves is are we seeking Him because we believe in His name and want to honor Him as King.
None of us began as “the worshipping type, if you know what I mean”. Because to worship Jesus is to recognize Him as King and that means that we have step down from the throne of our lives and given them to Him.
The best news that you will ever hear is that this King who rightfully belongs on the throne of each of our lives is the perfect King! He is perfectly loving. He is perfectly gracious. He is perfectly forgiving even as He is perfectly just. He is perfectly good…and while He doesn’t invade our lives like an earthly conquering King would, He does invite us to give Him our lives so that He can lead us into every good and perfect thing in this life and for all eternity.
John 1:12 (ESV)
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
I desperately want you to have a “Rock’n Royal Christmas” this year by recognizing Jesus as the King of your life. For the only Peace to Hope in at Christmas is found in submitting ourselves to the one who was born King.
If you have any questions or want to talk about any of this I would love to talk to you. You can find me after the service or if you want to talk later then just fill out one of the orange cards in the chairs and I or one of the Overseers here will get back with you shortly.
Again, thank you kids for such a great example of sharing the message of the King of Kings with us. Let’s pray and then we will get the chairs and tables set up for brunch.
