Matthew 2:11
Matthew 2:11 NKJV
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
By understanding the substance of myrrh, every person can see the following qualities of Jesus' work on the earth:

1. Consecrated

Illustrated in the holy anointing oil

Exodus 30:22–33 NKJV
22 Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, 24 five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25 And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; 27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; 28 the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. 29 You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests. 31 “And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.’ ”
What was consecrated?

Jesus’ work on earth
Work that only God Himself could accomplish
Addressing humanity’s
Sin problem
Death problem

2. Eternal

Because He has an eternal throne, His garments are “scented with myrrh”

Psalm 45:6–8 NKJV
6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. 8 All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.
Myrrh recognized the eternal nature of God the Son who intended to work within His creation in order to redeem it
As well as the work itself
Important truth to keep in mind
God is not limited by time
So His schedule will often look far different than yours
Because He can see all of eternity—past, present, future
You cannot

3. Pain

Jesus became my “myrrh”

Because by refusing the wine mixed with myrrh, He took on in full force the pain that came from MY sin
Mark 15:23 NKJV
23 Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
Myrrh was used as an anesthetic
Different types of anesthesia
Some totally knock you out
Some kind of make you do a deep “doze”
Others are local
Numb the pain
Jesus, however, refused to go under the anesthesia
Took on the pain full force
Pain that should have been mine
So that I would not have to
Thus He became my “myrrh”

4. Fragrance

Myrrh was used to remove the scent of death

John 19:38–39 NKJV
38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
As Jesus’ body was embalmed
Strip of linen
Sealed with aloe/myrrh “glue”
Another strip of linen
Sealed
I become the fragrance of Christ to those watching me
2 Corinthians 2:15
2 Corinthians 2:15 (NKJV)
15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Now What?

Jesus Became Your Myrrh

He has set you apart for Himself
He has given you life that has made you eternal
He took the pain that should have been yours
He has removed from you the scent of death

What’s Your Next Move?

Receive the gift of everlasting life Jesus promises to those who believe in Him for it
He paid for it, becoming our “myrrh”
