Intro

Continuing in Gospel of Mark
today two miracles
Today we are going to be talking about Healing
Do you believe that God heals people?
Yes, God healed people in the Bible
Do you believe that God heals people today?
if so, let me make it more personal
Do you believe that God could heal you today?

A couple stories

These are from Lee Strobel’s book The Case for Miracles, which i’m giving a way 2 free copies.
Also i’ll have two amazing stories printed back there for you to take
they were too long to share but they are powerful stories of God’s miraculous power
Woman Healed
Cambridge University professor John Polkinghorne, one of the world’s foremost scholars on the intersection of science and faith, provides the account of a woman whose left leg was paralyzed in an injury.
Doctors gave up trying to treat her, saying she would be an invalid for life.
In 1980, she reluctantly agreed to prayer from an Anglican priest. Though she had no expectation of healing, she had a vision in which she was commanded to rise and walk.
professor Polkinghorne reports that ,, “From that moment, she was able to walk, jump, and bend down, completely without pain.”
71 year old man in Florida
A grapefruit-sized flesh-eating ulcer, with the wound going to the bone, was boring through the calf muscle.
After treatments failed, doctors declared the wound incurable and amputation was scheduled. However, one physician laid his hands on the oozing wound and prayed for healing.
Recovery began immediately; within four days, the ulcer was melting away and new skin forming. By the following week, the leg was restored to normal. The doctor’s opinion: “It can’t happen on its own. Impossible.” The patient’s wife summed it up: “God’s real. God healed his leg.”
These stories come from Craig Keener who is an atheist turned biblical scholar.
He has written a Award Winning 4 Volume Commentary on the Book of Acts
Here is his two volumes work on Miracles where he lists 100s of documented healings around the world
I believe that God is still healing today
how about you?
Do you believe that God could heal you today?
I hope to show you that he can and he may
and we are going to pray for healing in obedience to Scripture at the end.

Bible

We are in Mark 5:21-43 as we continue in the Gospel of Mark.
Today we will see Jesus perform two miraculous events:
The healing of 12 year old affliction in a woman
The raising from the dead of a 12 year old girl.
If God does in fact heal people today, what can we learn from this account of healing.
We are ask:
How God heals?
Why God Heals?
Why we should ask God to heal
Let me read the entire passage, then we will make some observations and applications.

READ Mark 5:21-43.

PRAY

Luke 4:18–19 (CSB)
18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
James 5:14–16 (CSB)
14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

Why we should ask/expect Healing?

Let’s start with the end.
I want to convince you as to why this text really matters
In other words, why healing is not just something Jesus did 2000 years ago, but something he is doing today.

Nervous?

Does this make you nervous? uncomfortable?
There have been abuses for sure
faith healers, name it and claim it
crazy charismatics, Pentecostals
But there is a Biblical precedent and pattern for healing.
So let’s not throw the potential for God to heal out b/c some have abused it
We don’t do that with teaching right?
b/c some have abused teaching we don’t say that nobody should teach,
only that we should teach biblically.
Biblical Healing

Context

THE TRAINING OF THE TWELVE
STRUCTURE OF MARK
Mark 1:1-3:12 — Jesus Establishes the Kingdom
Mark 3:13-19 — Jesus Calls the Twelve
Mark 3:20-6:6 — Jesus Trains the Twelve
Peter, James and John for the raising
Mark 6:7-13 — Jesus Commissions the Twelve
Mark 6:12–13 (CSB)
12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons, anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
The Twelve do the very works Jesus was doing.
This continues into the book of Acts
Peter heals lame man (Acts 3:6), Aeneas (Acts 9:32-35)
Paul heals a man (Acts 14:8-9), Everyone on Malta (Acts 28:9-10)
raises Eutychus from the Dead (Acts 20:9-10)

Not Just the Twelve

in Luke 10:1 Jesus sends out the 72

Luke 10:1 (CSB)
1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go.
Luke 10:9 (CSB)
9 Heal the sick who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near you.’
Luke 10:17 (CSB)
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”

In the book of Acts

Philip the deacon
Acts 8:7 (CSB)
7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.

The Gift(s) of Healing(s)

Furthermore the gift of healing is mentioned as a spiritual gift in 1 Cor 12:9

James Command

Finally, James 5:14-16 commands us to pray for the healing of the ick
James 5:14–16 (CSB)
14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

Evidence

Historical Evidence of Healing miracles though the ages
Into our own day
Craig Keener’s Book
Barna Survey
According to a 2016 Barna Survey
some 94 million Americans are convinced that God has performed at least one miracle for them personally 38% of the Population
If that is true, then what can we learn from this text about How God heals? and Why God heals some and not others?

How God Heals?

How does God heal?
What’s the answer? — Sunday School Answer = JESUS
That’s exactly right.
But Jesus tells the woman in Mark 5:34 that her faith has healed her.
Mark 5:34 (CSB)
34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved/healed you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
Does FAITH heal/save you?
No, faith by itself doesn’t heal anyone.
It is FAITH in the ONE who has the POWER to heal you.
It is Faith in Jesus that heals her.
Jesus is the one who heals
it says “power went out from him”
Mark 5:29–30 (CSB)
29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him.
The power to heal comes from Jesus.
that means:
We cannot muster up enough faith to be healed
We can’t repeat a phrase enough to be healed.
the power is not in the faith or in the words
it is in the person of Jesus.
It is not the strength of our faith but the object of it.
The same is true for Jarius.
What was it that drew both this woman and Jarius to Jesus?
it was faith, trust, confidence that Jesus could heal.
That’s the nature of faith.
Biblical faith by definition points beyond one’s self and to God.
Our culture talks a lot about having faith in yourself
that is not biblical faith, biblical faith is Faith in Jesus to accomplish miracles
Faith in Jesus to work in and through us.
This people were healed becuase they had a faith that brought them to Jesus
in fact, it was a faith
Faith shows persistence in overcoming any obstacles.
The woman works her way through the crowd and overcomes any sense of shame she might have had or fear that she might somehow contaminate Jesus or others by reaching out to touch him.
(3) Faith is embodied in action.
Faith is something that can be seen, like the men digging through a roof to bring their friend to Jesus. It kneels, begs, and reaches out to touch. Belief about Jesus does not bring healing, but faith in Jesus that takes action does. Neither the man nor the woman identify Jesus as the Messiah or even as a prophet. They are unclear precisely who he is, but they believe that he has the power to heal and are willing to put their faith to the test.
RABBINIC TRADITION EXAMPLE
A rabbinic tradition interprets Exodus 14:22 to mean that only after the Israelites had gone into the sea up to their nostrils did the waters divide and expose dry ground (Exod. Rab. 21:10).
This interpretation accurately captures what faith is all about. It does not wait to see if the waters will divide and then step out. It steps out, trusting God to do what is needed.
Exodus 14:22 CSB
22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with the waters like a wall to them on their right and their left.
So Faith here is some kind of subjective experience that draws us to come to Christ for Healing.
But we must act
Both Jarius and the Woman had to act
their part was to COME TO JESUS
Faith is something we have, but it is also something we have to exercise
Thoughts vs. thinking
Legs and walking
presents and opening

Jarius

This is what Jesus says to Jarius right?
It doesn’t even have to be YOUR FAITH
Jairus has FAITH that Jesus would heal his daughter
this whole thing took too long and his servants and say to him
it is too late your daughter is dead.
Mark 5:35–36 (CSB)
35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36 When Jesus overheard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe.”
Believe = have faith
same greek word

Conclusion

So we have faith and our faith is meant to bring us to Jesus
our role is to come to Jesus.
Now where does faith come from?
Theologically my answer is that the Holy Spirit imparts it by grace
Ephesians 2:8–9 (CSB)
8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift9 not from works, so that no one can boast.
1 Corinthians 4:7 (CSB)
7 For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn’t receive? If, in fact, you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn’t received it?

Healing and Salvation

The words for Salvation and Healing are used interchangeably in this text.
ἰάομαι
hygies - hygiene
therapeau - (therapy) - In Luke, the physicians, account

What does that mean?

This healing is a parable of what salvation looks like.
in other words this teaches us that Jesus has both the power to heal phsyical afflictions and to save from sin
Mark 2:10 CSB
10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he told the paralytic—
I think both the woman and Jarius were saved by faith in this experience (we’ll come back to that)
It proves again that Jesus is God and Jesus has the power to heal and raise the dead.
So how does God heal people (both then and now)?
by faith in Jesus
that is a faith a trust that Jesus has the power to heal.
Acts 3:6–7 (AV)
6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
So Jesus has the power to heal, but then why does he heal?
Or why does he heal some and not others?

Why God Heals

Why does Jesus heal this woman and raise this child up?

Compassion

reason #1 — Compassion
Elsewhere the main reason that Jesus heals is that he had compassion on them.
I think we see this in how he responds to both the woman and the child.

The Woman

This woman would have been considered unclean
and was likely an outcast.
But she risks it all and touches Jesus’ clothing, thus making him unclean
Jesus realizes what has happened and turns around and asks who touched him.
She is terrified.
Mark 5:33 (CSB)
33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.
How was Jesus going to respond?
Shame her? Rebuke her? Take back her healing?
The woman may have feared the consequences of defiling a holy man by touching him in her unclean state.
She may have feared a rebuke for having delayed Jesus while he was on an important mission
Jesus tenderly answers her:
Mark 5:34 (CSB)
34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
He forces the issue so that when she leaves healed, she will leave knowing that the one who healed her knows her and cares for her.
She is a person who is worth taking time with and addressing.
It forces her to step out on faith and be identified.
It will not bankrupt her as the physicians had done, but she must publicly acknowledge her debt to Jesus, that he is the source of her healing.
When she does, he blesses her and announces that her faith has made her well.
• He points out that it was her faith
• he faith that brought her to HIM
• Go in PEACE = wholeness, shaloam
It covers wholeness, well-being, prosperity, security, friendship, and salvation. Jesus bestows this peace on her (see Matt. 10:13; Acts 10:36).
• you have been healed - restored, cleansed
• And her life was restored.

Jarius Daughter

What does he say to Jarius’ daughter?
Mark 5:41 (CSB)
41 Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”).
this term “little girl”, little child
is a term of affection, of endearment
One reason Jesus heals people is out of compassion
but why does he heal some and not others?

Sovereign Choice

Jesus healed many, but he didn’t heal everyone.
Abuses:
God wants to heal everyone
If you are not healed it’s your fault.
John 5
John 5:3 (CSB)
3 Within these lay a large number of the disabled—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
Jesus selected one man out of all of those to heal.
Why?
The simple answer is that Jesus only did what the father told him to do
He only did the works that the Father showed him.
In other words, God heals some, out of his good redemptive purposes
Ephesians 1:11 (CSB)
11 In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,
God heals some for his good purposes and he chooses not to heal some for his good purposes.
This is HARD — We can’t understand sometimes
But we know that GOD Works powerfully through suffering.

God wants to heal everyone

The truth is God desires to Heal everyone and God will heal everyone one day
it is not a question of IF God will Heal, but WHEN God chooses to heal, according to his purposes.

To Reveal the Future Kingdom

What’s happening when he heals someone is that he is revealing the future Kingdom.
one day when heaven and earth unite
sin and sickness will be no more
We will all be completely healed for those who have faith in Jesus.
When God chooses to heal today it is a glimpse of the kingdom to Come and it is a validation of the King, son God
that Jesus has the power to bring the Kingdom of God to earth.
He heals out of his compassion, and according to his own sovereign purposes

To Advance the Present Kingdom

I think the main reason that God heals is to further the Kingdom of God
to bring people to saving faith
and to strengthen the faith of his people.
Parts all over the world today where people are getting healed, raised from the dead
it looks like the book of Acts, or the ministry of Jesus.

GOSPEL

Sometimes Jesus performs the lesser miracle of healing someone so that they can believe the greater miracle of his own life, death and resurrection.
That God so loved the World that he took on flesh and lived amongst us and took all our our sins upon himself
and died the death we deserved
and be raised to a new life — a life of resurrection power
A life of Kingdom Presence and Power
It’s both the Proclamation of the Gospel and a demonstration of it’s power

Jarius

think about this
Jarius is a synagogue leader
We don’t know his views on Jesus before his daughter is saved
Perhaps he was hostile to Jesus.
But it was God’s sovereign plan to allow his daughter to get sick and die and to be raised to life
so that Jarius might come to saving faith
A leader in the synagogue
think of the implications.
This kind of thing is still happening today.
Miraculous Movements:
Story of Motorcycle Breakdown
Leads two missionaries to a nearby Muslim Village
Chief’s wife has just died
One man felt incredible urge to pray for her so he did and she was raised from the dead
The whole village came to Christ.

For the Glory of God (not man)

To reveal that Jesus Christ is the son of God
and has the power to forgive sins, and reconcile us to the father.
and is bringing a new kind of kingdom, a foretaste of the kingdom to come.

Conclusion

We serve a Miraculous God
A God that is just as compassionate today as he was when he walked the earth
A God who is still advancing his Kingdom until all have heard
A God who still heals today and raises the dead.
Jesus who took all of our sin, all of our infrimities, all of our shame upon himself on the cross
and was raised to new life with new power
the power of the Kingdom of God
The power to Save, to restore, to heal.
Do you believe that God heals today?
Do you believe that God could heal you today?
I want us to pray for healing today in obedience to James 5:14-16 and out of faith.

PRAY FOR HEALING

Anyone here need healing?
Physical healing
physical afflictions, pains, diseases
Mental Healing
anxiety, depression
Emotional Healing
bitterness, anger, unforgiveness
Spiritual Healing
demonic oppression

Directions

Go ahead and raise your hand or someone else you know
exercise faith — Jarius and the woman had to walk towards Jesus.
I’m going to pray in a moment
For those around them, feel free to extend a hand,
lay a hand on them if they are ok with it
any one else?
I’m going to pray for healing
and then we will respond in worship
and during that song we’ll have elders and leaders off to the sides
if you want to get prayed for healing personally
or just talk to someone
And certainly if anyone experiences healing come let me know in the back, we want to glorify God

Prayer

God, glorify your name. We humbly come to you today and ask for miracles. We ask that you would unleash the power of the Kingdom of God.
There are many here in need of healing and so we ask Lord Jesus by the power in your name would you heal today. Right now.
We declare that the enemy has no power here and we renounce all demonic agreements and break their power by the authority in the name of Jesus.
Jesus come now and heal your people. We ask becuase you told us to.
Heal out of your compassion.
Heal to advance your Kingdom
Heal so that our faith might be strengthened.
Heal so that some would come to a saving faith.
Heal to glorify and magnify your name.
Lord we love you and we pray all of this in the name of your son Jesus Christ and by the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
