I. Christmas is about the Saviour
I. Christmas is about the Saviour
Our first point is Christmas is about the Saviour.
Our second reading this evening was from the account of the angel appearing to Joseph before the birth of Jesus.
Joseph has found out that Mary is pregnant. He knows he is not the father and he doesn’t know what to do. At this time an angel appears to him in a dream and explains the baby in Mary’s womb was created in her by the Holy Spirit, and that the baby was the Saviour who came to fulfil the promises of God.
In Matthew 1:21 the angel says “21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
We live in a culture today that tries to make Christmas be about all kinds of things. Some will say its about family, others will say its about doing good. Others will say its about Santa and seeing the children happy as they open their presents.
However, the Bible says Christmas is about the Saviour.
We learn from the words of the angel that Jesus came for a purpose, that is to save his people from their sins.
What did the angel mean by this?
Who are his people and how will he save them from their sins?
His people refers to those who belong to him. These are those who believe in him. Those who have repented, turned from their sin and believe in him. They are trusting in Jesus Christ to save them.
The are those who are saved, but what does it mean to be saved from sin and how does Jesus do that?
To be saved from sin means to be forgiven by God for all the bad things you have done in your life. It means to have all your rebellion against God forgiven. The punishment of hell to be removed and instead the gift of heaven given.

Luke 2:10-11 “10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Matthew 2:2 “2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.””
Matthew 2:11 “11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
Matthew 2:7-8 “7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.””
