OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S CALL
Responsive Reading……….. Psalm 2 Its on pages (TH p. 785-786) in your Trinity Hymnal
Why do nations Conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and Against his Anointed One.
“Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.
I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me,”You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
“Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”
You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
Therefore, you kings be wise; be warned you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
*LET US PRAY
Prayer of Confession and Repentance
Grant, Almighty God, that, since you have until now so kindly invited us to yourself, and daily invite us,
and often interpose also your threatenings to rouse our inattention,
and since we have been inattentive to your reproofs,
as well as to your Kindness to us your children
Help us to not proceed in our wickedness, and thus provoke the vengeance that we deserve
Help us to anticipate your wrath by true repentance,
and be humbled under your hand,
even by your Word,
that you may receive us into favor,
and nourish us in your paternal bosom,
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Assurance of Pardon……………...……..……………...….. Hebrews 8:10-12 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.””
LET US RISE FOR THE SINGING OF GODS WORD

LET US PRAY
Congregational Prayer
Lord, teach us to be resigned to your will; teach us to delight in your law;
teach us to have no will but your will; teach us to be sure that everything you do is good
and is the very best that can be done.
Help us to leave our concerns in your divine hands, being persuaded that you have sway even over evil; that out of it you bring good,
till your high purposes shall develop in your own perfect glory,
and in the perfect bliss of all those who put their trust in you.
Father we Pray for _____________ and we ask for all these things in the powerful, glorious, majestic, and wonderful name of Jesus Christ Amen.

THE LORD FEEDS US FROM HIS WORD
TURN IN YOUR COPY OF GODS WORD TO Psalm 2:1-12
“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”
May the Lord add His Blessing to the Reading of His Word

Hear now the Word of the Lord

Peter and John Before the Council

4 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

The Believers Pray for Boldness

23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,

“ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage,

and the peoples plot in vain?

26  The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers were gathered together,

against the Lord and against his Anointed’—

27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

The Grass Withers and the Flower Fades But the Word of Our God shall stand forever.

The Gospels effect on its Hearers. Acts 4:1-31

Vs. 1-12 Believers Believe and Unbelievers are angered.

English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
4 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.
So what is happening in our text this morning?
Peter and John are speaking to the people about the Word of God.
About the God who caused this healing of this man who had been crippled in his legs for 40 years.
They all new of this man and the sign couldn't be denied by them according to verse 16 which says.

16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

And this has got all the high government official upset.
And the priests.
Acts (Exegesis and Exposition)
The reference to the captain is the Greek term which refers to magistrates or officials in a city (16:19–23, 35–36, 38 [of Philippi]; Luke 22:4, 52).
This captain is the sāgān who was in charge of the temple police
He was a member of the high-priestly family and the number two man at the temple,
It was an elite position among the Levites who made up the temple guard.
So this is who is arresting Peter and John.
And these men in power would be the equivalent to the sheriff and the Mayor of the town.
So the Mayor just sent the Sherif to arrest Peter and John for preaching the Gospel.
talking about the things of God.
Offering them the Word of life to people who are dead in trespasses and sins if they don’t hear there message and receive it.
Its the only message that can save someone.
Because Christ was raised from the dead.
Thats what they are proclaiming that Jesus Christ saves and he was resurrected from the dead. according to verse 2
A message that the Sadducees were against before it even took places in the life of Jesus.
Only the Pharisees believed that a resurrection was going to happen.
Not the Sadducees.
They denied the resurrection (Luke 20:27–40; Acts 23:6–10), believing that the soul died with the body,
And so why are they greatly annoyed?
Why are the officials upset?
because their message is gaining an audience and the people are being converted.
The Spirit of God just saved 5000 men.
5000 men heard the Word and believed.
5000 men is an army.
So maybe this aristocratic group of Sadducees that verse 6 mentions.
Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.
is feeling threatened that all these men are believing on the resurrection that they deny
The resurrection that Jesus was the long awaited messiah.
And so they do what all men who are in places of power in the government do when they feel threatened they lock it down.
They call the police or in this case the Captain of the temple.
And Peter and John are arrested.
And they got to spend the night in jail.
Becasue as the text says it was already in the evening when this was all happening.
And if you have ever spent the night in Jail you can relate.
Unfortunately I can relate because I was arrested and spent the night in Jail one night in my youth for an unjust law that was enforced in the city of Cleveland regarding the length of a knife you could have on your person which I had for a just reason self defence.
So I can relate with Peter and John in spending the night in jail.
I was handcuffed.
the police “came upon me” and put handcuffs on me”
they took my shoes
There was a man who was sleeping in the cell with me who smelled of alcohol.
I got to call my dad who picked me up the next morning after working all night.
Jails are not a pleasent place to be.
So let me ask you this question are you willing to be locked up for righteousness sake.
Are you willing to be arrested for sharing the Word of life.
That Jesus Christ can save you because he was resurrected and has over come the grave.
And no other God can save you.
Not Buddha, Not Allah, Not the false God of the Jehovah witnesses, and certainly not Joseph Smith or the False Jesus they Worship.
Becasue if you proclaim the Word of God publically as I am now.
Or if you share it to an individual or a small group.
Christ’s Word and the Spirit can convert through those means.
So be willing to boldly share your faith
Even if officials in the government try to silence you.
Be willing to die for the truth of the Gospel.
The truth that Jesus alone saves.
The truth that know one else saves but Jesus.
Becasue maybe the Lord will use his Word in your mouths to do what happened in John and Peters day.
Verse 4 says
English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
And if you are arrested and questioned like Peter and John your answer should be what there answer was Christian.
Lets read Verses 8-12

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

So Jesus is the corner Stone.
Jesus offers Salvation.
And no other name under heaven is given among men by which we must be saved.
Next in our recounting of this historical event verse 13-18 speak to what the response of unbelievers will be.
Those that hear the message like the Sadducees the Lord chose not to work in their hearts At this time.

Vs. 13-18 Unbelievers Scoff and try to Silence those who share the Gospel

These men are just uneducated fishermen.
Well they were fishermen according to Matt 4:18-22
Were they common men.
I guess a fisherman is a common men.
What are other common jobs.
Mechanics, Janitors, Lawmen, you fill in the blank.
The Sadducees are saying these men are unqualified to be teaching the people.
They have not gone to our schools.
They have not sat under our tootiledge.
Education does not make men Bold or True.
If your education is in False ideas or Idealogies
Then your still wrong,
You just suffer from another Sin the Sin of Pride.
Only a proud man would call these men uneducated.
So How can these uneducated men be so Bold
How can they be so Bold in their message.
Well the Sadducees answer the question.
they were Bold because they perceived they were with Jesus. according to verse 13.
Study your Bible.
Read your Bible.
Memorize Scripture
And men may perceive your a Christian and that you spend time with Jesus And you may be grated boldness from the Lord.
If The Spirit has awakened you brothers and sisters and if you studied his word seriously over the course of your life.
Unbelievers may call you
Common Men
Uneducated
But hopefully they are astonished like the Saducces were.
And the Message you declare to them.
That Only Jesus Christ can save men.
When you explain to them what Propitiation means.
‘If you don’t know what propitiation means memorize WSC questions 27-29.
Memorize question and Answer s 27 and 28 and 29 of the Westminster shorter catechism

Question 27

Wherein did Christ’ s humiliation consist?

Christ’ s humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, (Luke 2:7) made under the law, (Gal. 4:4) undergoing the miseries of this life, (Heb. 12:2–3, Isa. 53:2–3) the wrath of God, (Luke 22:44, Matt. 27:46) and the cursed death of the cross:; (Phil. 2:8) in being buried, (1 Cor. 15:3–4) and continuing under the power of death for a time. (Acts 2:24–27,31)

Question 28

Wherein consisteth Christ’ s exaltation?

Christ’ s exaltation consisteth in his rising again from the dead on the third day, (1 Cor. 15:4) in ascending up into heaven, (Mark 16:19) in sitting at the right hand of God the Father, (Eph. 1:20) and in coming to judge the world at the last day. (Acts 1:11, Acts 17:31)

Question 29

How are we made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ?

We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effectual application of it to us, (John 1:11–12) by his Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:5–6)

So Unbelievers Scoff and try to Silence those who share the Gospel
So the Sadducees in our text this morning recognize they had been with Jesus.
And that the man had been healed that is standing next to Peter and John they could say nothing.
What could they say we find you guilty of healing this man who has been lame for all his life.
He couldn't stand his entire life.
And we couldn't heal him.
But these uneducated Common men healed him and they say it was Jesus the Christ who healed him.
The messiah who healed him.
the same Messiah that has the power to heal you from your sin darkened heart.
The Same Messiah that there is Salvation through.
Our Mediator.
Our King.
And so what is there response.
They have a pow wow they talk amoung each other.
These Saducees who are the real uneducated common men becasue they don’t know Christ.
Their response was one of unbelief.
Lets look at verses 15-18
English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
There has been a notable sign.
Its undeniable.
All the inhabits know it happened.
So instead of asking more questions?
Instead of saying tell me about the power of this Jesus who you proclaim healed this man.
We will use our power and try to silence you from sharing this message of life with others.
So the Saducees charge them
command them
and tell them according to verse 18

18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

This is what unbelievers do.
They will shy away from spiritual conversations.
They are not Bold.
They are fearful.
They want you to shut up.
Remember that in your dealing with people in the church as well.
There is this thing called the visible and the invisible church.
The visible church is those who you see around you.
The invisible church are those around you who know Christ. There are always wolves or goats among the sheep.
Those who hear the Word of God and run from Christ.
Those who are only pretending to be believers.
Those who are willfully ignorant of the things of God.
And would tell you to quit talking about the exclusivity of Jesus.
Those who when you ask about how they came to faith?
Or who is the Christ whom they serve?
Avoid the conversation.
Becasue they can relate more with these Sadducees than Peter and John.
And only Christ knows who his sheep are but their are outward signs indicators of who his sheep are.
Are you excited about your faith and the message that Christ saves sinners.
Or do you hiss or clam up when the conversation arises.
Are you a Sadducee
Or are you a follower of Christ.
Are you Bold for the Faith.
Or Are you a coward and ashamed of th Gospel.
SO “How is the Gospels effect on you who are hearing it today”
Does it sound sweet like honey.
Or is it bitter like a Dandelion Green, Arugula, or Kale.
Because the Gospel will effect you one way or the other either your a Saduceee.
Or a believer in Christ.
which brings us to verses 19-23

Vs. 19-23 Believers Obey God before men.

Believers Obey God before men.
Lets read verses 19-23
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. 23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
did you see the different response’s to the challange of the Gospel the Saducees let Peter and John go why?
Becasue they feared the people.
They were people pleasers.
They cared more about what their neighbor thought and the 5000 men that were converted.
than what God had commanded them to.
Their is no name given among men that you might be saved except through Jesus Christ.
Peter and John really had been with Jesus and maybe remembered the story of Shadrack Meeshack and Abendigo.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are figures from the Book of Daniel, primarily chapter 3. In the narrative, the three Hebrew men are thrown into a fiery furnace by Nebuchadnezzar II, King of Babylon for refusing to bow down to the king's image.
And there response is like the response of Peter and John.
We must obey God rather than men whether it cost us our lives or not.
One is focused on God and the other is on man
One has had the Gospel effect their hearts by softening it and driving someone to confess their sins.
and the Other the gospel has hardend and they conceal their sin and are angry at God.
It really is light vs Darkness
God vs Satan
And God is in control of it all because he is sovereign.
And if you are converted
vs 21 describes you

And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened

You praise God wether you are going to be killed
or your experiencing a difficult providence.
Or you curse his name.
Which brings us to verses 24-31

Vs. 24-31 Believers Praise Gods Sovereign hand and His Word.

Believers praise Gods Sovereign hand and his word.
Lets read vs 24-31
24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,“ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain?26  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
Believers praise God through quoting and singing Gods Word.
Peter and John recognize Gods sovereign hand of deliverance
It was God who converted the 5000 men.
It was God who healed this man lame in the legs for over 40 years.
It was God who made the man lame from birth.
They lifted their voices that means they sang Psalm 2 to the Lord.
They recognized God as the creator of everything.
who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything that is in them.
Does that sound like what God says about himself in Genesis.
They believed in the Authority of scripture they recognize God speaks to us through the pen of David in the Psalms.
So Peter and John recognize that these men Pontus Pilate, Herod, these
men along with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander
the gentiles the people of Israel who were against Christ this is a fulfillment of Psalm 2
And they prey to Christ thanking them for their current Boldness and ask for continued Boldness.
To preach the Word of God.
To call sinners to repent and turn to Christ.
So if you don’t know Christ I thank God for his upholding me
and I pray that he will give you boldness to proclaim Christ to your neighbors and to your unbelieving friends
and don’t keep the Gospel to yourselves.
Becasue if we share it we are trusting in Christ and Gods loving and Sovereign hand.
If we conceal it why would anyone change they haven’t heard the words of life from your lips.
The lips Christ redeemed for his purpose.
For his sovereign plan.
Share him with your family with loved ones with tenderness.
Becasue without him they are headed to hell.
without Christ they are as
Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander.
Share him and praise our Sovereign God Christ Jesus.
no help without him.
Let us pray.
