From the beginning, the Promise of Jesus coming was set in motion. What we are celebrating this week is the birth of the Promise! Let start with the beginning in the book of Genesis.
9 But the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you?
10 He said, I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me—she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate.
13 And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled (cheated, outwitted, and deceived) me, and I ate.
14 And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all [domestic] animals and above every [wild] living thing of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust [and what it contains] all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel.
The plan for Jesus to come started in the Garden!
The plan for Jesus to come started in the Garden!
As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, God already had a plan to redeem mankind from that sin and His name is Jesus. He is the seed of the Woman and that seed would destroy the seed of the serpent. Isn’t that just like our God. He is always steps ahead of every situation we face and has the answer already in process for us to succeed.
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
God gave us a sign that is impossible!
God gave us a sign that is impossible!
Here’s the sign, a virgin giving birth. Impossible! But with God is anything is possible. That is a sure fire sign that this is part of God’s plan.
6 For unto us a child is born; unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder. These will be his royal titles: “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “The Mighty God,” “The Everlasting Father,” “The Prince of Peace.” 7 His ever-expanding, peaceful government will never end. He will rule with perfect fairness and justice from the throne of his father David. He will bring true justice and peace to all the nations of the world. This is going to happen because the Lord of heaven’s armies has dedicated himself to do it!
God also promised what His present, Jesus, would be for us!
God also promised what His present, Jesus, would be for us!
The names in this passage give us the attributes of Jesus. He’s Wonderful, He’s our Counselor, He’s the Mighty God, The Everlasting Father and the Prince of Peace. His Kingdom is everlasting. Now that is a Christmas promise!!
19 And her [promised] husband Joseph, being a just and upright man and not willing to expose her publicly and to shame and disgrace her, decided to repudiate and dismiss (divorce) her quietly and secretly.
20 But as he was thinking this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of (from, out of) the Holy Spirit.
21 She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus [the Greek form of the Hebrew Joshua, which means Savior], for He will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent them from failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God].
22 All this took place that it might be fulfilled which the Lord had spoken through the prophet,
23 Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel—which, when translated, means, God with us.
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from his sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him: he took [her to his side as] his wife.
25 But he had no union with her as her husband until she had borne her firstborn Son; and he called His name Jesus.
The best Christmas gift ever!
