Some people do not truly understand what Christmas is, like this guy, (show pic) tonight is actually about Jesus and that is why we light the Christ candle.
John 1:14–18 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Lighting of the Christ Candle
**Pray and Band Exits**
Tonight we are doing something we have not done in 10 years. We are concluding a book series on Christmas Eve, we are finishing up the book of Ruth. So for those of you who haven’t been with us over the last 8 weeks let me bring you up to speed.
Story of the Book of Ruth
We ended Sunday with the final question of the book hanging out there, will the line continue or will the redeemed line die with Boaz and Ruth?
Thankfully tonight we get our answer quickly in 4:13-22
Ruth 4:13 ESV
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.
1. God provides a son. (vs. 13)
The question is answered!
Life has come from death.
Light has come from darkness.
God reversed it all and sent them a son so the line would continue. It could not just be a baby it had to be a son.
Culturally the son was necessary for the line to continue so God not only provided a baby, he continued the line, but he did not just provide a son. The baby was more than just a baby boy,
2. God provides a redeemer. (vs. 14-15)
Ruth 4:14–15 ESV
14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”
This baby was a type of redeemer. This baby brought Naomi from famine to fulness. It wasn’t when Ruth was married that this happened, it was when the baby was born.
Restorer of life - Turn your life around
Nourisher of your old age - Keep you together
Everything Naomi had lost, this baby would provide.
3. God provides a promise. (vs. 16-22)
Ruth 4:16–17 ESV
16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Nurse - Nanny
Women of town name him Obed
genealogy - leading to David
So what promise?
Genesis 22:15–18 ESV
15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
How is this a fulfillment of a promise?
Matthew 1:1–17 ESV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
A promise is only a good as the person who makes it.
God gave Abraham a promise that his line would provide the seed that would bless the nations and that line ran through David. If God had not provided Obed the line would have stopped with Boaz and Jesus would not have been born according to the promise.
God was at work in providing Obed. He used a famine, death, sorrow, suffering, shame, providential guiding, and His covenantal commitment to accomplish it. God was always at work in the book of Ruth to bring Obed so the promised line would continue that would lead to Jesus. What an amazing thought that God was so committed to bringing Jesus, the redeemer of the world, that even in the time of the Judges where everyone did what was right in their own eyes, He was at work.
There are two things I want to end with tonight when it comes to Obed that I believe we need to see on this Christmas Eve.
Obed was the redeemer that turned Naomi’s life around, but Jesus is the redeemer that turns our eternity around.
GOSPEL
Obed was the redeemer that would hold Naomi’s life together, but Jesus is the redeemer that keeps our life together.
GRACE
On this Christmas Eve, we see Jesus as a baby and rejoice that He came so our eternities could be turned around and our lives held together.
