Entice: The Gospels of Luke and Matthew describe the birth of Jesus in some detail. They are not so clear on explaining why and for to what end. John addresses neither His virgin conception nor the circumstances of His rustic birth. John does however, give an indication of why and to what end.
Engage: Without the Christmas details we expect, John summarizes God's motive in one succinct verse.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Expand: John gives theological depth to the specifics of history. John reminds us about our stake in the birth of Jesus. For John it is not only His story it is our story. For John, who Jesus is, has a direct, life-changing impact on those who respond in faith. All the pomp and pageantry of Christmas catches our eye and fills us with wonder. John tells us that this coming of God to dwell among us, His physical stepping into history has eternal consequences.
Excite: On this silent night I invite you to think, just for a moment, about those consequences which are the result of Jesus’ birth. You know, we are still impacted by them today! That is the consequence of Christmas.

Touch and Go landings…Bloomington airport: It was just practice. The incarnation was not a touch and go landing. It was not practice. God with us became, the most real, reality for we who respond to Him in faith. He promised to never leave us. He promised and provided His Holy Spirit; the comforter to maintain His presence among us. His presence is permanent.

Like Israel in the wilderness God has pitched His tent among us and His glory through the incarnate Christ shines upon AND includes us.

Shut Down:
Jesus birth was both Mysterious and miraculous. It had particular and universal impact. It happened then and there, but enfolds us here and now.
Here and now upon this special night we will share together the symbolic meal He gave us to remember the reality Immanuel, and by thus remembering to proclaim His sacrificial death till He comes again.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see!
Hail the incarnate deity
Pleased as man with men to dwell
Jesus our Emmanuel.
