Luke 2:1-20

Let’s get right to this passage of Scripture Luke 2:1-20...........
As we near the 25th of Dec. in which we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Lord has led me to bring us to the correct life of worship (living). This life is one where all the petty questions are all destroyed, all the humanistic arguments about church are laid to rest! There is nothing that can challenge this glorious truth!
Britt and I was riding down the road back in October and we were listening to Christmas music. Yes, we start early! O Come All Ye Faithful by Faith Hill began to play and the Lord just moved my spirit to think of this moment with the angels as they appeared to the shepherds the night of Jesus’ birth.
As we read the shepherds were tending their flocks and all of a sudden an angel appeared to them and his declaration was that of good tidings (good news) that carried great joy with it to all people (the whole world).
The angel announced to the shepherds the birth of God’s Son which is come to earth as the Christ the Savior!
The angel told them how they would find Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
The most humble beginnings, wrapped like a lamb for sacrifice and laid in a manger!
Not the way “deliverers” are supposed to make their entrance, according to human thinking!
There is something here that is amazing, the angel and the heavenly hosts, despite the humble entrance, began to praise God!!!
What we know of angels, this was not forced praise, Lucifer was the worship leader of Heaven until he chose to be try and be like God, he was then cast out of Heaven along with a 1/3 of the angels.
This seems to speak that these angels worship freely out of their own will!
So, that truth makes this scene even more important! They freely began to praise God, they were sent to make the announcement, but, suddenly they began to worship God!
Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men!!!
Peace” refers here to the fullness of blessing which the Savior/Christ/Lord brings and is essentially a synonym for salvation Acts 10:36 “The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)”
Because of this peace brought by Jesus Christ, God’ Good Will/Favor is sent toward men!
These Heavenly host and that angel knew exactly what was happening, they saw Jesus sitting at the Right Hand of The Father and leave that place and came to earth in a virgin’s womb, specifically to bring peace with God and man!! What has been desired by all of Heaven since the fall of man!!
They could not help but to exalt the Godhead and burst into singing!!
The shepherds knew of this Messiah, and following the exaltation of the Heavenly hosts and not being concerned about how He came; they ran without concern and with haste to the place where Christ the Lord laid!! (We will talk about that more tonight!)
What is the reason for all of this excitement and praise! What would cause these from Heaven to burst out into this exaltation? I spoke of it earlier, but the point of us today is to get us out of our complacency and bring us to the state of mind and heart that the Heavenly hosts and the shepherds were, every day, not just on Sunday, not just during Christmas, not just during Easter, not just during a revival, not just during a song.........This knowledge, This Truth of Jesus Christ, should keep us until He comes again!
Philippians 2:5-11...............The is what the angel and the hosts knew.......this is what we know.........I want to touch on what they knew briefly to reinstate us into this worship and come back to the song O Come All Ye Faithful........
Let this be our attitude, let this dominate our minds as it did Jesus’mind!
Christ Jesus, Whose existence was as God, He has never nor will He ever be anything else but God!
Jesus thought it not robbery to be equal with God......this just simple emphasizes the beginning of the verse.......that being God for Jesus was not something that He had to seize or grab, He was God!
Colossians 1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:”
This is very important, we must take this as serious as it is! Jesus is God! We read this past Wed. night what Jesus said in John 10:30 “I and my Father are one.”
Verse 7 begins with, “but”.................Jesus as God made Himself of no reputation.....God the Son....
This verse might help us understand the weight of this.....Colossians 1:16-17 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
These verses speak to what Jesus did in making Himself of no reputation Isaiah 53:2-3 “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, And as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
This has a meaning of “emptying Himself” and He became a slave to the will of the Father!!!
Jesus’ Glory was veiled or covered on earth.......We get a glimpse of His Glory on the Mt. of Transfiguration!
Paul shifts from His Heavenly to earthly “emptying” to the earthly ministry of Jesus.....
Humbling Himself to the effects of human existence, which He is not worthy of at all....but experienced them just the same, so that we might have an passionate advocate!
Humbling Himself so much that He became subject to persecution ans suffering the likes that no human has ever experienced!
Obedient unto death, a criminal’s death on the cross....
Death was unknown by God and His Son, They were not created nor will they ever cease to be, but Jesus allowed Himself to die....that was bad enough......but Jesus went further......
Death by a cross, was execution! Even greater, being found guilty.........Found guilty by the unjust....”the just for the unjust”
Jesus also was found guilty on our behalf 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he (God) hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, (Jesus) who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (Jesus).”
The penalty of sin before God is eternal punishment, Jesus bore that penalty on the cross!
Jesus’ selflessness shows up in the garden while He was agonizing over what He was to bear: He says, “Father, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done.” And He even says, “For this I was born, to go to the cross and die.” He humbled Himself.
Augustine said of Jesus: “The maker of man became man, that He, the ruler of the stars, might be nourished at the breast; that He, the bread, might be hungry; that He, the fountain, might thirst; that He, the light, might sleep; that He, the way, might be wearied by the journey; that He, the truth, might be accused by false witnesses; that He, the judge of the living and the dead might be brought to trial by a corrupt mortal judge; that He, justice itself, might be condemned by the unjust; that He, discipline itself, might be scourged with whips; that He, the foundation, might be suspended upon a cross; that He, courage personified, might be weakened; and that He, security, might be wounded; and that He, the very life itself, might die.”
Augustine went on to say, “To endure these and similar indignities for us, to free us unworthy creatures. He who existed as the Son of God before all ages, without a beginning, deigned it to become the Son of man in these years, did this though He who submitted to such great evils for our sake had done no evil and although we, who were the recipients of so much good at His hands, have done nothing but evil.”
Then Paul tells us that for this reason God has Highly Exalted Jesus His Son:
His Lordship
His Faithfulness
His Earthly Life
His Humiliation
His Death
His Resurrection
His Ascension
His Coming
His Judgement
Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess at His Name, it is a name above every name!!
This is why the angel and hosts were singing and praising, they knew and saw first hand the departure of Jesus to earth and their spontaneous response was so powerful and great!
Now, as I listened to O Come All Ye Faithful, I began to ponder about the past and all the things that we all have been through! I spoke a couple of sermons ago about my failure as a son to my dad, and I can think of so many things.......but that has no measure to what the Heavenly hosts are singing about.......I continued to think about all of the things that has happened over the years, as the song continued, all the trivial things that I have allowed to dominate my life...........There is no matter of life that measures to the Reality of Jesus Christ!!! I debated about whether or not to mention this or not, but I will.........churches throughout history, all across the world, have had all kind of disputes and disagreements, meetings after meetings, and there is Only One Truth.......I have heard and also participated in the most silliest arguments and disputes, I have been the accused and also the accuser, debates over carpets, roof, silverware, food, money, etc., etc........but the only call for His faithful......
His faithful to be joyful and triumphant, because of Christ Jesus’ life and finished work!
His faithful to come and behold the Jesus born as man, the King of angels......
Come let us adore Him!!!
Sing with the angels and the Heavenly hosts, all you faithful, sing in exaltation.....Glory to God in the Highest, peace on earth.....the enmity between man and God has been resolved by Jesus Christ, the penalty has been paid.....so come all you faithful, come let us adore Him!!!!!
I love this last part........Yea, Lord we greet Thee, born this Happy morning....
Jesus, to Thee be all glory that is given!! The Word of God becoming flesh and appearing for us!!!!
Unto us is born this day in the city of David, a Savior Christ the Lord!!!!!!!!!!!
Come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!!!!!!!!
Is this mind in you? Is this your attitude? Does this attitude only stimulate at church, during worship music, or is this your life????? Let this mind be in you, as it was in Christ Jesus!!!!!!!
