Intro

one of the most popular stories in the gospels
feeding the 5000 and what leads up to it
who is Jesus and what is the kingdom that he is teaching about and bringing about?

Sending out the Apostles

Jesus gathers them together and gives them what they can’t possibly understand or do for themselves
the mission is far greater than performing miracles
the kingdom of God is at hand- the thing all of Israel has been waiting for
this is what life looks like in the kingdom, that sickness and demons and sin and death are powerless in comparison to God
the life that is in God is all that they needed

Who is Jesus?

Herod, the king hears of this and is perplexed
Is he John or Elijah or something else?
odd that Herod kind of gets the right idea- that he will rise from the dead himself

Feeding 5000

the crowd gathered as they were returning to Jesus
telling him of all that they had done and amassing even more of a following
the disciples want to send them away
Jesus gives the command to feed them
one of the craziest and most memorable miracles ensues
twelve baskets were left after likely over 10000 were fed from 5 loaves and 2 fish
this is what the kingdom of God is like, that the worries and problems and multitudes are overcome and taken care of at a word

Application

this is what the apostles went around proclaiming
this is what all of Jesus teaching that is attempting to change the people’s perspective on who God is is all about
the kingdom was at hand then and it is full and alive and working now
these men gave everything that all might be a part of that kingdom, even when they didn’t understand it completely
what does the kingdom mean for you? how far would you go?
