John 6:1–15 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” 6 This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.

V. 1-3

John 6:1–3 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.
After Jesus had that “check-mate” argument with the Jews, we see the next thing that takes place.
After this: could mean a half a year after the events of Chapter 5
the reason for this is: when they Bible says “the other side” most Jews and readers back then would understand this as “to the East side”
because most activity happens on the West side
when Jesus sit down, its custom for a teacher to sit down to teach

V. 4-6

John 6:4–6 (NASB95)
John 6:4–6 NASB95
4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” 6 This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do.
These people traveled to see Jesus .
As Jesus most likely took a boat. The people walked to Jesus.
Jesus saw these people and when into service mode.

Jesus ask Philip a question.

Jesus did not ask the question because he wanted to know, He was asking to test him.
He already knew what He was going to do. the Miracle was already in the plan
Jesus was not worried about these people

V. 7

John 6:7 NASB95
7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.”

Denarii

1 Denarii equals to 1 days wages
200 Denarii could equal 8 months of wages
Philip is estimating that it would take more then half of year of word to feed all these people.
The task seemed impossible.

V.8-9

John 6:8–9 NASB95
8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?”
First see that after Jesus talks to Philip, of the situation,.
Now we see Andrew (the one who brought Peter his brother to Jesus) brings a young man to Jesus with his lunch
the young boy (could be a teenager or a guy in his young 20s) came with when we would call ones lunch for the day. (5 Barley loaves and 2 fish) they were small
the barley loaves is a normal food for poor people, the taste is not as great, (it could be considered to be a generic brand bread)
the fish was dried or cooked, most likely dried.
This would not be enough for these people.
The task seems impossible

V. 10

John 6:10 NASB95
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
Jesus has the people sit down.
the number is 5,000 men (or heads of family)
this does not include woman and children
it cant be estimated that 20,00+ people are there
lets not forget Psalms 23:2
Psalm 23:2 NASB95
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
Jesus, our good Shepard, is leading people to rest as he provides.

V.11-12

John 6:11–12 NASB95
11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.”
Jesus preforms a Miracle.
fed all these people until they were filled.
Jesus keeps with the normal practice of gathering up the leftovers.

V.13-14

John 6:13–14 NASB95
13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
some think that this is a subliminal message of Jesus gathering God’s people, thje Church so that none is lost
12 Disciples and 12 baskets of fragments
thought 12 tribes of Israel.

V. 15

John 6:15 NASB95
15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
The kingship of the Messiah was a spiritual one, but a political one.
The Jews were looking for a great military political leader
someone that will satisfied there political agenda and to make Israel the world’s powerhouse.
But the People’s heart was off.
They were going to make Him BE KING BY FORCE” (like a kidnapping)
The heart of the people was not in the right place. Trying to force Jesus as king would not saved the people.
They wanted Him to be King because of the things that he has done, because there were entertained, not because they wanted to savior.
Jesus Jesus is the savior.
He is showing them His Glory so that they my be saved, and all they see if there materialism, political interest.
Jesus will have things happen to us that is good.
He will bless and has blessed us.
