Reading: John 1:14-18
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”)
16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The Word became Flesh and Dwelt among Us
The Word became Flesh and Dwelt among Us
That word for dwelt is a kin to a Hebrew word you might have heard before: Shekinah. God’s shekinah is his glory - the essence of his being. It was so intense, that Isaiah found himself in the room with just the hem of God’s garments and that was enough to invoke a declaration of his sin and woe before God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
In Jesus, the Shekinah glory of the Father is most visible.
In Exodus 33, Moses asks God a profound question: who will go with Israel and Moses through the wilderness. Moses will not accept just any answer, either. He entreats God by telling him not to bid them onward unless God himself will guide them. Then Moses makes a profound request:
18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
What a statement!
19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”

27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
28 Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”
Notice the effects of God’s presence:
I will be their God
They will be my people
The nations will know the Lord
Israel will be sanctified
God will be with them forever
