Christmas eve is one of the most exciting days of the year anticipation and excitement is everywhere
I was at the store earlier today to get the final pieces to christmas dinner and you could feel the anticipation
Everywhere stores are closing early today
people are traveling or have arrived
Even the stock market closes early on christmas eve
This is the night of anticipation for all
Believers and unbelievers both are expecting something to happen tomorrow
Believers and unbelievers alike are hopeful for tomorrow
The gifts
The time with loved ones
The food
Maybe just a day off to relax
There is anticipation for what comes for tomorrow
For us as believers we have extra anticipation
Tomorrow we celebrate Jesus Christ being born
We celebrate the fact that our eternities are changed forever due to this birth that happened over 2000 years ago in that little town of Bethlehem
The birth of Jesus Christ
And on this Christmas eve I want to take some time for us to remember exactly who it is that we celebrate
This Jesus Christ who is he
READ MATTHEW 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
As pastor Jesse read earlier in Matthew 1:21
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
He is the one who will save his people from their sins
Or in Matthew 1:23
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
He is God with us
Who is this Jesus
He is God with us
He is the one who will save us from our sins
And we must decide what we will do with that
Jesus is God with us
Jesus is God with us
Read Matthew 1:22-23
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
God has come to this earth to be with us so that he can save us. Lets read John 1:1-4 and verse 14
Read John 1:1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
This is a description of God
All things where made through him nothing was made without him
In him there is life
This is a description of the creator of God
But look down now at verse 14
John 1:14 (ESV)
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
This Word became flesh and dwelt among us
The most divine and important event in history
The Moment in that manger when the word became flesh
When the word dwelt among us
This is God coming to dwell with his creation
The Father sending his Son on a mission to be near his creation in order to reconcile his creation to himself
We needed God to come and and be with us so that he could save us from the debt we would never be able to afford
God said he would come and rescue us at the beginning of the book and now here we are
He has sent his son now to recuse is
He is the one who will save us
He is the one who will save us
Jesus is God come to be with
And he is here to save us from our sins we see
I love how Paul puts these ideas together in Colossians
Look at Colossians 1:15-20
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Verse 19 The fullness of God was pleased to dwell
All of God was pleased to dwell in Jesus
Then in Colossians 1:20
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Through Jesus Christ his people will be reconciled to himself
He will make peace for us with god through his cross
Later in Colossians 2:13-14
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
He comes to nail our sins and trangressions to the cross
In order that we may be made alive with him
and lest we think it cost him nothing to do this
Jesus Gave up everything to be with us to reconcile us
Jesus Gave up everything to be with us to reconcile us
Read Philippians 2:5-8
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Anticipation
the people of Israel anticipated a savior
anticipated god coming to dwell with them
the answer to their anticipation was Jesus Christ and now that we know who he is….
What will we do with this is the big question
The first question is answered who is this Jesus
He is God come to this earth in order to save us
The next question we must answer and thats one I cant answer for you is who will Jesus be to you
Is this just a great story that adds to the magic of the season
Or is this Jesus christ your savior is he God of your life
Our answer to this question has eternal ramifications
And I hope and pray that if he is God of your life then I hope you live in daily obedience to him
And if you answer this
