OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S CALL

Responsive Reading Psalm 119:33-56 pg.829-830 Trinity Hymnal

Psalm 119:33-56
“Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees then I will keep it to the end.”
Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with my whole heart.
Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.
Turn my heart to your statutes, and not toward selfish gain!
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; and preserve my life according to your word.
Fulfill your promise to your servant so that you may be feared.
Take away the reproach that I dread, for your laws are good.
How, I long for your precepts! Preserve my life in your righteousness.
May your unfailing love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise;
Then I will answer the one who taunts me, for I trust in your word.
Do not snatch the word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws.
I will always obey your law, forever and ever,
I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.
I will speak of your statutes before kings and shall not be put to shame.
for I delight in your commands, because I love them.
I will lift up my hands to your commandment, which I love, and I will meditate on your decrees.
Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope.
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
The arrogant mock me without restraint, but I do not turn rom your law.
I remember your ancient laws, O Lord, and I find comfort in them.
Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who have forsaken your law.
Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge.
In the night, I remember your name O Lord, and I will keep your law.
This has been my practice, I obey your precepts.

*LET US PRAY

Prayer of Confession and Repentance
Grant, Almighty God, that, since you have until now so kindly invited us to yourself, and daily invite us,
and often interpose also your threatenings to rouse our inattention,
and since we have been inattentive to your reproofs,
as well as to your Kindness to us your children
Help us to not proceed in our wickedness, and thus provoke the vengeance that we deserve
Help us to anticipate your wrath by true repentance,
and be humbled under your hand,
even by your Word,
that you may receive us into favor,
and nourish us and continue to draw us unto yourself,
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Assurance of Pardon……………...……..……………...….. Hebrews 9:11-14 “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

LET US RISE FOR THE SINGING OF GODS WORD

Hymn of Thanksgiving TPH 119D Psalm 119:25-32 My Soul Is Sinking Down to Dust

LET US PRAY

Congregational Prayer
Lord, teach us to be resigned to your will; teach us to delight in your law;
teach us to have no will but your will; teach us to be sure that everything you do is good
and is the very best that can be done.
Help us to leave our concerns in your divine hands, being persuaded that you have sway even over evil; that out of it you bring good,
till your high purposes shall develop in your own perfect glory,
and in the perfect bliss of all those who put their trust in you.
Father we Pray for _____________ and we ask for all these things in the powerful, glorious, majestic, and wonderful name of Jesus Christ Amen.

OLD Testament Reading Joshua 7:1-26

TURN IN YOUR COPY OF GODS WORD TO Joshua 7:1-26
Joshua 7:1–26 (ESV)
But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.” So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai, and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. Get up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.” In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel.’ ”
So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken. And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.” And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord. And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.
May the Lord add his Blessing to this reading of His Word
Explanation
What a sobering passage this was this morning.
Many today in the church might say to you Im glad we don’t serve that wrathful God of the Old Testament.
Well if you have that attitude I want to disabuse you of it.
The God you see here that had Achan and his whole family killed and burned with fire.
Thinks about sin the same way he did in the Old Testament.
And the only hope anyone had then or anyone has now is the blood of Jesus Christ.
Christ substitutionary atonement.
Lets turn now to our New Testament text to examine a similar story.
Turn now in your copy of Gods Word to Acts 4:32-5:11

SERMON

Acts 4:32-5:11 Gods is righteous to the generous and the thief.

Turn in your copy of Gods Word to Acts 4:32-5:11
thats Acts 4:32-5:11
Hear now the Word of the Lord

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Ananias and Sapphira

5 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

The Grass withers the Flower Fades But the Word of Our God Will Stand Forever.

HP - Gods is righteous to the generous and punishes deceivers.

Vs. 32-37 Giving out of your abundance.

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.

This is a look into the unity the early church was already experiencing.
When the text says you are of one heart.
And of one soul
We are talking about your heart - the way you think
What you believe
Not about the muscle pumping blood through your body.
And of one soul - the essence of who you are apart from your body.
It’s the part of you that goes to heaven when you are a believer.
And then is reunited with your Body when the Lord Jesus returns for the final judgement.
And the making of the new heavens and the new earth.
So these believers were at their core heart and Soul united.
You would have to be to have everything in common.
Let’s face it children have trouble sharing.
And Adults can have trouble sharing.
But this isn’t a giving that had to be done.
The apostles didn’t command it to be done.
And the Lord Jesus Christ didn’t command it to be done.
They did it out of a generous heart and soul towards the Gospel ministry.
They were living out 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
God loves a cheerful giver not a reluctant one.
And this isn’t the Tithe we are speaking about.
This isn’t the 10% of your income that is mandetory and required by God’s law to give to the church for the furtherance of the Gospel.
These are free will offerings.
Which if we have the ability to do we should do it.
So these brothers and sister are living out their faith in generous ways to each other and fueling the Gospel mission.
And the Gospel mission is the Great Commission which was given by our Lord in Matthew 28:19-20
English Standard Version (Chapter 28)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This is the essence of how the Gospel was having a great effect in Jerusalem according to verse 33.
English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
So God is pouring out his grace on this early church and
God is blessing them with fruit for their righteousness.
Stronger ties between each other.
A common mission
A common goal
To tell the World about Jesus Christ and the resurrection.
That Jesus Christ had overcome the grave and calls all men everywhere to repent and believe on him for life.
Verse 34 gives us some insight about these men and women who were able to be generous.
They owned land and houses.
So they were hard working people.
People who took the dominion mandate serious.
If you are not sure what the dominion mandate is.
it was given by God in Genesis.
It is simple Work 6 Rest 1 tithe on the increase.
That is what God gave Adam to do in the Garden and gives us to do today in the work he has called you too.
Be a diligent productive member on Gods Earth.
And live out WSC question 1 What is mans Chief End?
To glorify God and to enjoy him forever.
1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
But you have to own something to be able to sell it and give it away.
So you have to be a good stewart of the funds the Lord has entrusted to you.
Otherwise how can you help?
And that is what the saints did here in Verses 34-35
English Standard Version (Chapter 4)
There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.
So here in the beginning before they appointed Deacons to do this type of mercy ministry
the apostles were distributing these proceeds to those in need.
And can you imagine?
No one had any needs among this Christian community.
Everyone had food.
Everyone had somewhere to sleep.
And we have a great example from one of our Brothers in Christ on how to go about doing this.
Lets look a verses 36-37

36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
And this Joseph who Got the Nickname from the Apostles Barnabus is living up to his nick name isn’t he?
He is definitely a Son of encouragement.
We are told he is a Levite
Levites were those who performed subordinate services associated with public worship.
the Levites were musicians, gate keepers, guardians, Temple officials, judges, and craftsmen.
Levites were also the benefactors along with Windows and Orphans in the Old Testament of the tithes and offerings of the Jews.
Let’s look at an example of this is Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy 26:12-13

12 “When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, which is the year of tithing, giving it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your towns and be filled, 13 then you shall say before the Lord your God, ‘I have removed the sacred portion out of my house, and moreover, I have given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all your commandment that you have commanded me.

So we see this Levite would have been familiar with the generosity God had commanded his people to carry out.
But this levite
This Son of encouragement
Joseph
Nicknamed Barnabas
owned some property and sold his field and gave all the proceeds to the apostles for the good of the community.
To help out those in need.
And to help with the funding of the early church.
How can we do this today?
We must follow his example
Work 6 rest 1 tithe on the increase and if we own property that we don’t need to take care of our own families with or have more than enough to help the church.
I have had the benefit of hearing about many saints who have sent men to seminary, helped widows and orphans and the elderly in the church with there abundance later in life.
‘It truly is more of a blessing to give than to recieve.
And through God’s providence we see their is a need.
Maybe you could be given this Nickname
And be a Son or a daughter of Encouragement to others in the church in need.
So we should consider giving to the work of the church to help the windows and orphans.
And those within the covenant community that have a genuine need.
And today we are blessed and I pray that one day Living Stone will have deacons that can attend to these sorts of needs in Wichita Falls.
But you as the body are obviously all ready capable of doing what you can when you can to help the church.
even in these early stages of her development.
So I encourage you to be a a Son or daughter of encouragement.
Becasue Christ is righteous to the Generous.
Christ is a Father to the Fatherless
Christ has given you all he had and continues to mediate for your sins because of His righteousness.
Christ does and will use you as the hands and the feet hear on earth to carry out his great commission.
lets look at some other passages of scripture that speak to this.
2 Corinthians 5:20-21

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Romans 12:1

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

And 1 Corinthians 12:14-27

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

So again I encourage you to be a Son or Daughter of encouragement in light of what Christ has done for you and what he calls you to be as his disciple.
So God honors those and protects those and provides for those who are his children and those that follow his commands and order their lives accordingly.
Now we must look at the deceptive deceivers in our recounting of this history of the church.
Ananias and Sapphira who would lie to the church and pretend to be apart of her for show only.

Lying to God and the Church about Giving

Chapter 5:1-6
English Standard Version (Chapter 5)
Ananias had money
Ananias had property.
Ananias had a wife named Sapphira.
All these things were given to him by God.
All these things are blessings from God.
But that wasn’t enough for Ananias.
He wanted the praise of men more than the praise of God.
He wanted to be seen in the light Joseph was seen in
Ananias wanted the nickname from the apostles Son of Encouragement.
But he wanted it at a discount.
The land was his he didn't have to sell it.
He could have sold it and only gave some of the sale to the community.
He could have done that and been honest about it.
But instead he chose to lie to the apostles.
Lie to God.
Lie to the Holy spirit.
And Satan sifted him like wheat.
Ananias cared more of what others thought of him than the living God.
Was Ananias a believer or was he a wolf in sleeps clothing.
Only God knows.
But those who would use the church for their own selfish pride.
who would rather deceive her and her officers than help her are probably not converted.
If you care more about what those around you see you put in the offering plate or in the bag or box in the back of the building.
Or that the officers of the church count up weekly from the tithes and offerings.
Or what people perceive or think about you.
You are playing with fire.
Ananias according to Peter lied to the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit the one who gives life to those in need of regeneration.
And he wanted the praise of men over the SALVATION OF THE SPIRIT.
INSTEAD HE WAS KILLED ON THE SPOT.
THE TEXT SAYS IN VERSES 5-6

When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

And just when you thought it was bad.
It is about to get worse.
And dread comes over the whole church because up until this moment they were experiencing unity in the brotherhood of believers.
A man and his wife share a bed together.
they share a life together.
they have children together.
But don’t you ever lie for one another.
Because your sinning against God when you lie.
And your sinning against the Spirit of God when you lie.
And not just the men and women in the church you sit across the pew from.
Lets read verses 7-11

What was the sin of Ananias and Sapphira?
It was testing God the owner of Everything.

Testing God the Owner of Everything

Lying to the Author and giver of life.
The God who made the heavens and earth and all that is in them.
The God who gave them wealth.
The God who gave them each other.
But his wife was just as deceitful as he was and lies to the church about what they sold the land for.
Ananias and Sapphira had a father and it was the devil the father of lives.
Don’t let Satan use your pride against you.
Don’t let Satan use the wanting of the praise of men and women against you.
Because the pride and wanting the praise of men is a fickle thing.
Especially today with things like facebook and twitter and every other social media platform.
We can try to put a pretty face on for the world to see.
For other men and women to see.
How many likes or hearts we can get.
But if our goal in life is the praise of men and other women.
Brothers and Sisters our priorities are backwards.
If we really do desire to praise God with our money or time and our resources.
Then do it in private.
Don’t do it for the praise of men.
Do as this passage instructs you to and give ear to Matthew 6:2-4 ““
Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
This passage and our passage this morning from Joshua should point you to the only relationship that matters when you die.
The relationship with Jesus Christ.
Are you called by the Father
Has the Son redeemed you?
And has the Spirit drawn you to himself?
If so Gods is righteous to the generous and punishes deceivers.
And if you are in Christ you have nothing to fear because he has paid for that sin too.
But if you are not in Christ and you have not been regenerated.
And you don’t know the Jesus I m offering you today. Cry out to God and the Spirit of God and maybe he will have mercy on your soul.
‘Because no amount of deceiving or lying will bring you into the kingdom of God.
only repentance towards a thrice holy God.
only by the power of the mediator.
only through the finished work of Jesus Christ.
who really does see you when you sleep,
who really does know when your wake,
who really does know if you have been sinful or good.
And really does have the keys to heaven and hell.
And not some made up character that some assign attributes of God to this time of the year.
And lie to their children about his existence.
their are no such things as white lies.
only truth or a lie
justice or falsehood.
Remember brothers and Sisters be a son or daughter of encouragement to the church.
give to the church and those in need out of your abundance.
be a son or daughter of encouragement.
Let us pray to that end Brother sand Sisters.
