Have you eaten something which rather than nourish you actually made you feel worse?
Intro
I remember this time years ago when I had a bout of food poisoning, and it was absolutely horrible. The evening prior I had stopped by one of these convenience stores to get gas and when I went inside, they had an area where you could order food as well.
It was late and I was really hungry, so I decided to place an order and in the moment the meal was actually quite delicious.
However, I was awoken early the next morning with a terrible case of food poisoning which lasted most of the day. It was one of the worst illnesses I have ever experienced. I left thinking how could something which seemed so fresh and so good actually be so harmful to me. Needless to say from that moment on I have made it a point to be more careful about where I consume the food I eat.
The Bible also gives us warnings about what we consume and in today’s main scripture reference Jesus provides us with just such a word of wisdom.
Matthew 16:5–12 NLT
5 Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. 8 Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? 9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? 10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? 11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ ” 12 Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

You Must Digest What You Ingest

Galatians 5:9 NLT
9 This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!

Discern Using God’s Word

1 John 4:1–4 NLT
1 Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. 2 This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. 3 But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here. 4 But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.
