Intro

Meery Christmas, finishing our Christmas series The Promise today. What have we looked at so far, The Promise of a new King, our destiny can change & does change when we accept a new King over our lives, knocking us of the thrones of our lives & putting Jesus where He belongs on that throne.
The promise of a rescuing King, that was always the plan for God to come & be one of us, to live fully Man, fully God to pay be the sacrifice for us, rescuing us from ourselves so that we can have eternity with Him.
Yesterday, The Gift & what a gift God has given us & we finish today with the Promise of a forever King.
The promise of this King, our King Jesus was spoken of from the beginning of time & as i said last week was at the beginning of time, He is with us through time & the promise of a forever King is that He will be there at the end of time. Everything that you could do wrong or think wrong up till the end of this world has been paid for by Jesus. His sacrifice, His body, His blood spilled for you & me 2000 plus years ago, the greatest rescue mission ever done, no super hero could have ever done it. No price to pat for it except to believe in Him & follow Him & His teaching.
So how do we know Jesus is the forever King?

But today lets just sit ourselves in Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
“For to us a child is born, to us a child is given”.
Isaiah is emphasizing the point for us, Jewish poetry uses this way of writing, if we hear it enough maybe it will sink in, we’ll get the point.
The Child is born, the son is given. This prophecy of the birth of the Messiah was to remind Isreal that the Messiah would be a Man.
David Guzik says “that theoretically the Messiah could have been an Angel or the Messiah could have been God without humanity, but in reality neither of those options would have been qualified the Messiah to be our Saviour & high priest as Jesus was”.
The point is that the Child had to be born, had to be vulnerable as a baby is, there is nothing more weak, helpless or dependent than a child.
Could God have created Jesus as a Man just like He did with Adam, absolutely.
But He wouldn’t have known what it was like to be one of us, vulnerable, reliant on others to grow like one of us, known, recognised, history as one of us, fully Man & yet fully God.
Some believe the scripture means that this future royal child will be a purely human descendant of David. Bothe Hezekiah & Josiah have been identified as this child but the titles given to this child & the discription of this Kingdom move far beyond anything that is applicable to any Man.
This scripture definitely speaks about the Messiah. This child has been given names that speak of His character.
He will have extraordinary wisdom, (Wonderful Councilor).
He will have life that is never ending, (everlasting Father).
He will bring peace, (Prince of Peace). The most amazing thing is that he is called, (Mighty God) & Jesus is confirmed as this child in Matthew 1:1. & matthew 1:22-23.
It’s incredible isn’t it, this truth, this amazing, Glorious truth that we need a perfect, infinite being to offer a perfect infinite atonement for our sins. We needEmmanuel, God with us.
He has been forever, He will be forever. It was so important that this child was born & it was so that the humanity of Jesus had a starting point.
The Son had to be given because the second person of the Trinity is eternal & existed forever as the Son even before he added humanity to His deity.
He never became less God when He came as one of us, bt added human nature to His divine nature & so became one person with 2 distinct natures, functioning completely together in perfect harmony.
Because Jesus is both God & Man shows us that man is really made in the image of God. Genesis 1:26
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
This could be a mind blown moment because it did mine when i read it. Ready.
What Jesus being both God & Man says is that our problem is not our humanity, but our fallenness. To say “i’m only human” is wrong, because Jesus was fully human, Yet perfect.
It is more accurate to say “i’m only fallen”.
Now remember that the humanity that Jesus added to His divine nature was not the Sinful humanity we commonly know, but the perfect humanity of Adam & Eve before the fall.
Another thing to show us that our King, Jesus is our forever King.
