Introduction

Greetings…
v
1 Peter 2:2 ESV
2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

Common Arguments

Mark 16:16 Argument.

In Mark 16:16 we read this…
Mark 16:16 ESV
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
The argument against Jesus saying those baptized will be saved is…
“Jesus only says those that “don’t believe” will be condemned not those that don’t believe and be baptized will be condemned.”
Let’s look at that argument.
It really doesn’t take much do show how illogical this argument is.
If I were to say, “Here in Oklahoma if you turn 16 and pass your drivers test you will get a drivers license but if you are not yet 16 you will not get your drivers license” one can easily see the common sense in this.
Jesus didn’t have to mention baptism in the second part of the sentence because if one does not believe they will not be getting baptized anyway.

Acts 2:38 Argument.

In Acts 2:38 we read this…
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The argument goes like this…
The Greek word “eis” or English word “for” or “unto” in “for the forgiveness of sins” can mean “because of such as in Matthew 10:41.
In other words we repent and then because of the forgiveness of sins we are baptized.
Acts 2:38 NKJV
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Notice the slight rewriting of the text.
Let’s look at that argument closer now.
First, let’s look at that passage in Matthew that was used as a proof text for the use of “because” instead of “unto.”
Matthew 10:41 (ESV)
41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.
You can see from this translation that it would appear this use of “eis” as “because” is correct, however let’s look at a more accurate, in this case, translation.
Matthew 10:41 NASB95
41 “He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
In the case of the ASV, KJV, NKJV, NASB95, etc… they correctly translate it as “in” as in “into” or “unto.”
The meaning being that the one that receives a prophets authority will be rewarded and the one that receives a righteous man’s authority will receive a reward.
They changed the complete meaning of the verse by miss translating the passage.
Well surely these scholars don’t make mistakes like that or put in their own biases into translations right?
Psalm 51:5 ESV
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psalm 51:5 NIV84
5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Secondly, you can find the Greek word “eis” over 2000 times in the New Testament alone not counting the LXX which is over 2000 times.
Every time other than Matthew 10:41 we find it translated with it’s actual meaning “leading to.”
Also, the Greek word “eis” is never found or translated as “because of” in secular Greek writings.
Thirdly, we find the exact same Greek construction in Matthew 26:28 where no one doubts this means “unto.”
Matthew 26:28 ESV
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Summary

These arguments simply do not hold up.
They should be held as false doctrine and therefore we should stick to the simplicity of Christ’s words as what they mean what they say.
Next, I want us to finish up these lessons on baptism by looking at…

Baptism’s Mode & Purpose

Its Mode Is Water.

As we noticed last week, there is no way baptism can be an immersion in the Holy Spirit.
As Romans 6:3-5 points out we are baptized into something and then come out of that something.
If it is the Holy Spirit we are baptized into the Holy Spirit and then leave the Holy Spirit and as Paul points out in Romans 8:9 if we don’t have the Holy Spirit we do not belong to Christ.
So, if not the spirit than what…water.
When baptism for the remission of sins was performed with John’s baptism (Mark 1:4) we see it was always in water.
John only baptized where “much water” or “plentiful water” was found.
John 3:23 ESV
23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized
John baptized Jesus in water.
Matthew 3:16 ESV
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
This use of water didn’t change under the New Law or Law of Christ.
The Ethiopian saw water and wanted to be baptized.
Acts 8:35–36 ESV
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Knowing the mode helps us examine the purpose of baptism.
So…

Its Purpose Is To Connect Us To Christ.

Baptism connects us to Christ by bringing us close again to God through reenacting the gospel or death, burial, and resurrection.
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Matthew 16:24 ESV
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Its Purpose Is To Wash Away Our Sins.

When we are baptized in water we come up a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) because we have had our sins washed away.
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 22:16 ESV
16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
Isaiah 1:18 ESV
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

Summary

Baptism’s mode is water and purpose is “to connect us to Christ” and “wash away our sins.”
