Pursuing Edification
Loving the brethren, Romans 14:15
Romans 14:15
But if because of food your brother is caused to grieve, you do not walk according to love. Stop destroying that one by your food, on behalf of whom Christ died
Pursuing peace, Romans 14:19
Romans 14:19
Therefore then, let us pursue the things of peace and the things of the edification, the [edification] unto one another.
Have your Faith to Yourself, Romans 14:22
Romans 14:22
Do you have faith? Have [faith] according to yourself before God. Happy is the one not judging himself in that which he approved.
The Stronger’s obligation to the Weaker, Romans 15:1
Romans 15:1
The capable, we are obligated to carry the weakness of the incapable[1] and not please ourselves
[1] Weak because they lack strength or inherent ability.
We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
The Hope of the Gentiles, Romans 15:8-13
Romans 15:8–13 (NKJV)
And I say, Christ Jesus came to be a minister of circumcision on behalf of truth of God unto the confirmation of the promises of the fathers.
And the Gentiles on behalf of mercy to glorify God, just as it stands written, “Because of this I will confess to You among Gentiles, and I will praise Your Name.”
And again he said, “You rejoice, Gentiles, with His people.”
And again, “You praise the Lord all the Gentiles and all the people, you praise Him.”
and again Isaiah says, "You will be the root of Jesse and the one risen to rule the Gentiles", on the basis of Him the Gentiles will have hope.
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace while believing, resulting in you abounding in the hope by the natural ability from the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:8–13 (NA28)
Filled with all Goodness, Romans 15:14
Romans 15:14 (NKJV)
And I am persuaded, my brethren, even I myself concerning you, that also you yourselves are saturated concerning goodness, having been filled with all experiential knowledge, while naturally able to admonish one another.
The Grace given to Paul, Romans 15:15-16
Romans 15:15–16
But I have written boldly to you from a part as to remind you because of the grace, the one given to me from God,
resulting in me being a public servant of Jesus Christ unto the Gentiles, rendering a priestly service; the gospel from God, in order that the offering of the Gentiles should become well pleasing, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Rendering Priestly Service, Romans 15:16
Romans 15:16 (NKJV)
resulting in me being a public servant of Jesus Christ unto the Gentiles, rendering a priestly service; the gospel from God, in order that the offering of the Gentiles should become well pleasing, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Sacrifice of Physical Body – Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Sacrifice of Praise – Hebrews 13:15
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Sacrifice of Doing Good – Hebrews 13:16
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Sacrifice of Fellowship – Hebrews 13:16
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Sacrifice of Giving – Philippians 4:18
Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.
Sacrifice of Faith – Philippians 2:17
Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
Communication with God
Ask, Colossians 1:9
For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Thanksgiving, Colossians 1:3
We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
Praise – the fruit of our lips confessing His character, Hebrews 13:15
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Confession – saying the same thing, 1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Vow – committing to do something if God permits, James 5:15
And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Supplication – a cry for help, Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
Intercession – Communicating with God on behalf of another, 1 Timothy 2:1
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
Our Boast in Christ, Romans 15:17
Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things which pertain to God.
Paul's Desire to Come to Rome, Romans 15:28
Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain.
Mark those who cause division, Romans 16:17
Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
Philippians
Philippians
Paul came to Philippi as a result of a dream, Acts 16:9-12
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.
Paul and Silas are falsely accused of upsetting the city and teaching what is not lawful (according to the Romans), Acts 16:21
and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.”
Sharing The Progress of the Gospel, Philippians 1:13-15
Philippians 1:13–15 (NKJV)
so that my bonds in Christ came to be clearly manifested among all the Praetorian guard and all the remaining.
And the greater of the brethren in [the] Lord, after being persuaded by my bonds, exceedingly dare without fear to speak the Word.
Some on the one hand also because of envy and strife, some on the other hand also because of good pleasure, are proclaiming the Christ.
Paul knows that their supplication and provision from the Spirit that he will be saved from the situation he is in, Philippians 1:19
Philippians 1:19
For I intuitively know that this to me will come down unto salvation through your supplication and provision from the Spirit from Jesus Christ
The most important is that Christ is declared, whether in life or death, Philippians 1:20
Philippians 1:20
according to my eager expectation and hope, that I will be put to shame in nothing, but with all boldness, as always, even now Christ will be declared great by my body whether through life or whether through death.
To live is Christ, to die is gain, Philippians 1:21
Philippians 1:21
For to me to live, Christ, and to die, gain.
It was graciously given to us to suffer for Christ, Philippians 1:29
Philippians 1:29
because to you it was graciously given on behalf of the Christ not only to believe in Him but also to suffer on behalf of Him,
Our Attitude Towards Life and Other Saints
Do nothing out of rivalry or meaningless thinking, Philippians 2:3
Philippians 2:3
Nothing according to rivalry or meaningless thinking, but in the humility of mind considering other as having more value than yourself.
Stop scoping out only your own things, Philippians 2:4
Philippians 2:4
Stop scoping out each of your own things, but also of each different one’s things.
Having a proper frame of mind, Philippians 2:5-8
Philippians 2:5–8
For let this frame of mind be in you that also was in Christ Jesus,
Who while existing in the form of God, did not regard for Himself equality with God to be seizing,
but emptied Himself, after receiving the form of a servant, He came to be in a likeness of man.
And after being found in the outward shape as a man, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient up to the point of death, even a cross death.
Philippians 2:5–8 (NA28)
Working out our salvation, Philippians 2:12
Philippians 2:12
So then, my beloved, just as always you have obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, with fear and trembling, you, for yourself, work out your salvation.
God is the one working in us to do His good pleasure, Philippians 2:13
Philippians 2:13
For God is the One working in you also to desire and to work out the good pleasure
Being a luminary to the world, Philippians 2:14-16
Philippians 2:14–16
All of you do all things apart from grumbling and disputing,
in order that you, yourself, should become blameless and innocent, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as luminaries in [the] world,
while holding fast a word of life, unto my boasting unto a day of Christ, that I have not run unto emptiness, nor toiled unto emptiness.
Repeating the Warning Concerning False Teachers
It is not something Paul does out of idleness, Philippians 3:1
Philippians 3:1
The remaining, my brethren, you rejoice in the Lord. To write to you the same things, on the one hand, is not idleness for me, on the other hand, is certainty to you
Look out for dogs, workers of bad, and self-mutilators (those stating circumcision is necessary)
Not boasting in the flesh, Philippians 3:3
Philippians 3:3
For we are the circumcision, the ones rendering religious service by the Spirit of God and boasting in Christ Jesus and not in a state of being confident in the flesh;
The Frame of Mind of the Mature, Philippians 3:15
Philippians 3:15
Therefore as many as are mature, we should frame the mind this way, and if anyone of you frames the mind differently, also this the God will reveal to you.
Pursuing according to the mark on the basis of the price of the above from God in Christ Jesus, Philippians 3:14
Philippians 3:14
and I pursue according to a mark on the basis of the prize of the above calling from God in Christ Jesus.
Knowing the power of His resurrection, Philippians 3:10
that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
Not having our own righteousness, which is out from law, Philippians 3:9
and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
Stepping at the Level of Maturity we are at, Philippians 3:16
Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.
Pay close attention to the ones walking properly, Philippians 3:17
Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.
A good pastor, 1 Peter 5:3
nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
How we as Christians should govern our lives, Titus 2:6-7
Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,
One who walks in the light has fellowship with the saints, 1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Walking in wisdom, Colossians 4:5-6
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Many walk as enemies of the cross, Philippians 3:18, 19
whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.
Our Citizenship, Philippians 3:20
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
The Victor’s crowns of the Saints, Philippians 4:1
Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.
Crown of Evangelizing, Philippians 4:1
Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.
Crown of rejoicing – for preaching the Gospel, 1 Thessalonians 2:19
For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?
τίς γὰρ ἡμῶν ἐλπὶς ἢ χαρὰ ἢ στέφανος καυχήσεως — ἢ οὐχὶ καὶ ὑμεῖς — ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῇ αὐτοῦ παρουσίᾳ;
Crown of righteousness – for those who love His appearing, 2 Timothy 4:6-8
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Crown of life – for enduring a temptation, James 1:12
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Crown of glory – for Pastors, 1 Peter 5:4
and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
Incorruptible crown – for exercising self-control in all things, 1 Corinthians 9:25
And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.
Having a proper frame of mind towards each other, Philippians 4:2-3
I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.
Let Your Gentleness be Known, Philippians 4:5
Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
