Romans 1:1-17
I. Salutations (Vs1-7)
A. The Author (Vs1-6)
Paul whose name was changed to Paul from Saul.
Some 25 years earlier Paul was Saul who was persecuting the Church.
He had those followers of the way arrested and even stoned.
But God got his attention when Saul was on his way to Damascus and Christ revealed Himself to Saul and Saul was blinded.
Saul surrendered to Christ and his name was changed to Paul.
Before being commissioned Paul spent three years in Arabia, Damascus and the Judean area.
He then spent some time in Jerusalem hoping to see Peter, but Paul was only able to see James.
Paul returned to Tarsus where he ministered there about 9-10 years.
Barnabas comes there and encourages Paul to go with him to minister at Antioch of Syria where the Church was growing at an enormous rate.
Initially Paul began teaching in his hometown of Tarsus, but Antioch became the home base for his three missionary journeys.
A Servant (Vs1)
Paul identifies himself as a slave.
Not the usual forced kind of slave the Romans were used to , but rather a volunteer out of love.
Remember in Exodus when a slave was freed but chose to stay with his/her master, they would take an awl and put their ear against the door post and punch a hole through it.
It showed the slave was submitted to his owner.
Thats what Paul says his identity is.
2. Called (Vs1)
Calling has to do with your gifting and your position of service.
Identity has to do with who you are.
Notice Paul says he was a slave before he was called.
3. Apostle
Apostle (apostlos) which means a delegate messenger, or one sent forth with orders.
Paul was directly commissioned by Jesus Christ to carry the Gospel to the gentiles.
(Acts 9:15)
4. Separated to the Gospel of God.
(vs1)
Separated means set apart.
Paul was set apart to preach the Gospel.
The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ.
B. The Gospel (Vs2-4)
What is the Gospel? 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
What does he say about the Gospel?
Promised by God before through His prophets in the Scriptures.
(Vs2)
Concerning His Son Jesus Christ fulfilling the prophecies of David.(vs3)
Declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection.
(Vs4)
Through Him we have received grace and apostleship.
(vs5)
Among whom you also are called.
(vs6)
C. The Recipients. (Vs7)
Saints and called at Rome.
Rome by far the largest city of Mediterranean antiquity.
The Church was started most believe as a result of a small Roman group being in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost.
(Acts 2:10) The small group returned to Rome and started the Church.
Many believe the Christian community in Rome grew exponentially.
Paul had never been to Rome but wanted to visit, however never made it.
He did however write this letter to them to instruct them in Christian Doctrine.

(Vs9-10)

(Vs10-15)
III.
The Theme of the Book of Romans.(Vs16-17)
A. The Gospel of Christ.
Three references to the Gospel.
Alva J McClain says in his book on Romans:
Gospel of God because He gave it.
Gospel of Christ because it is about Christ.
Gospel of Paul because he preached it.
All the same!
1.
The Power of God unto salvation.
a.
To everyone who believes.
b.
Jew first and also the Gentile.
2. The Righteousness of God revealed.
Denotes right standing before God ( a legal reality) that is given to people by God.
Only comes by faith.
Faith to faith means from beginning to end it’s by faith.
3. The Just shall live by Faith.
Literally means the righteous have life.
The theme of the Book of Romans is “The righteousness of God is revealed in the Gospel which when received by faith has the power to save.”
