Title: My Jesus, I Love Thee

Text:        & Ephesians 6:24

Illust:     Hymn –My Jesus I Love Thee:

My Jesus I Love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign; my gracious redeemer, my saviour art thou;

If ever I loved Thee, My Jesus tis now.

I love thee because thou first loved me, and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree; I love thee for wearing the thorns upon thy brow;

If I ever I loved Thee, My Jesus tis now.

I want to use this hymn as a launching place for this message this AM

         Paul finishes his letter to the Ephesians, wishing Grace on those who Love the Lord Jesus in sincerity. – How do we love the Lord Jesus? What does it mean?

I.                   Thou First Loved Me

A.               God is Love

i.                 First off we want to lay a foundation & that foundation is going to start with God. If we are going to Love Jesus, we have to understand that the foundation for all love is God for God is love.

         1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (NKJV)

ii.               A powerful short verse, help us in outreach, who is God? What is God? Easy! – Love! Help you to have a right perspective of God. Yes He is Holy, He is a righteous judge, no getting away from that, He will judge sin. But first & foremost He is Love!

iii.             That’s why He Himself has satisfied His righteous requirements of the law by sending Jesus to die on the cross in your place & mine.

         Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (NKJV)

B.               How Deep the Fathers Love

i.                 What a love, - The old hymns are full of the story of the Gospel. You & I lost: “Sunk deep in sin, guilty vile as I could be, no hope within” & then in amazement at the love of God that Jesus would come to go to the cross; the depth & breadth – “The love of God is greater far Than tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell.”

            It is an everlasting love that cares for you as an individual.

         Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. (NKJV)

            Sad when people feel that no-one loves them; the creator of the universe, God in heaven, loves you and calls you his child.

         1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. (NKJV)

ii.               The words of our hymn I love thee because thou first loved me – God Loves you!

II.                 My Gracious Redeemer

A.               Purchased My Pardon

i.                 Must never forget that we are sinners, saved by grace. That we deserve an eternity in hell, that nothing you & I could do could ever make you good enough to get into heaven. – Its not a scale of your good deeds weighed against your bad deeds. No!

         Isaiah 64:6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. (NLT)

ii.               Without hope, but praise God Jesus purchased your pardon on Calvary’s tree.

         Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, (NKJV)

            Our God is a God who is the God of Amazing Grace. He forgives and removes the stain of sin

         Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins. (NKJV)

         Psalm 86:5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. (NKJV)

            His perfect justice demanded a perfect substitutionary sacrifice – this is why Jesus came

         Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, (NKJV)

         Colossians 1:14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. (NKJV)

iii.             Another hymnist asks “Down from His splendour in glory came, into a world of woe, took on himself all my guilt and my shame, Why should He love me so?”  Job cries out:

         Job 19:25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; (NKJV)

B.               The Crown of Thorns

i.                  I love thee for wearing the thorns upon thy brow; - The crown of thorns;

         Matthew 27:29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (NKJV)

ii.               Thorns are a symbol of sin,

         Genesis 3:18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. (NKJV)

            Jesus was crowned with your sin, His glory is the taking on Himself your sins, the only one that could

         Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. (NKJV)

iii.             If you call upon Him, your sins are forgiven. Because of the agony of the cross. ~ Isaac Watts summed it all up in his awesome hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

         “See, from His head, His hands His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down; Did e’er such love and sorrow meet or thorns compose so rich a crown.”

III.              All the Follies of Sin I Resign

A.               Live Right

i.                 If you would allow the awesomeness of how much God loves you, of what Jesus has done for you;

         1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness— by whose stripes you were healed. (NKJV)

ii.               The only right response is as Peter exhorts, live for righteousness, die to sins. Turn away from everything that you know God hates.

         Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. (NKJV)

         Ephesians 4:22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, (NKJV)

iii.             Edward Studd a wealthy Englishman was saved during the DL Moody crusades in London in the late 1800’s. When someone asked one of his servants if he “had become religious or something”. His coachman responded “Well Sir, we don’t know much about that, but all I can say is that though there’s the same skin there’s a new man inside!” – Here is a man who had laid aside every weight and sin and loved Jesus. It was evident in a changed life.

         Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (NKJV)

B.               My Jesus I Love Thee

i.                 If I ever I loved Thee, My Jesus tis now. You turn from sin; you desire to live right; demonstrating your love for Jesus, because He first loved you.

         1 John 4:19 We love Him because He first loved us. (NKJV)

ii.               Hymns, songs of praise & worship they are a form of expressing love for Jesus.

         Psalm 63:3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You. (NKJV)

iii.             The real demonstration of love is obedience. – There are a lot of religious people, they speak religious words, but are they following the traditions of men, the ways of the world? Are you obeying the commands of Jesus as clearly laid out in the Word of God

         John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. (NKJV)

            The Grace, the comfort & peace of God is available to those who love Him in sincerity, they are obedient.
