House Rules: Phones, Respect, Stay on the Text

Mark 5:35–43 NASB95
While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe.” And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. And entering in, He said to them, “Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep.” They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.

Introduction and Review

The beginning of Jesus Ministry
Jesus’ message - repent and believe the gospel
Review the gospel
His teaching with signs and wonders
Focuses on the Gospel
How to have peace with God
Consequences: Rebellion against God
Miracles to prove who He is and the truth He preaches
Healing sickness
Casting out demons
Controlling the weather
Raising the dead, Jairus daughter
A great miracle - a dead girl is restored to life
As powerful as death is, Christ is mightier still
We get a peek at how Christ has the keys of death and that He will one day “swallow up death in victory” - Isaiah 25:8
Isaiah 25:8
Isaiah 25:8 NASB95
He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken.

#1 No one is beyond sorrow and sadness

Jairus was a ruler, yet sickness and trouble came into his house
Had wealth, medical help, money - could not help
Family of the powerful are just as liable to sickness as the poor
Daughters of rulers must die, too
Lesson: money and power do not eliminate sickness, death, sorrow
Many proofs to the contrary
examples
Death comes to palaces and mansions, as well as to those of us in poorer situations
Death
does not care about our plans
cannot be kept out by locks and bars
Hebrews 9:27 “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,”
Sickness and death are great equalizers
Come to everyone - no distinction
Heaven: Isai. 33:24 “And no resident will say, “I am sick”; The people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.”
Mark 5:35–36 NASB95
While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?” But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe.”

#2 The power of Christ is almighty

The message that pierced Jairus heart, his child was dead, did not stop Jesus for a moment
Jairus have been frantic, especially when Jesus stopped to heal the woman with the bleeding disorder
Jesus said: be not afraid, only believe
Jesus leaves none of His sheep behind
Mark 5:37-42(NASB95)
And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.

#3 The power of Christ is Almighty

Goes to the house, in spite of mocking, enters the room where the little girl is
“Talitha kum” - Little girl, get up.
Heart begins to beat, she starts breathing, she gets up and walks
they were completely astounded
Think about what a wonderful change took place in that house
weeping to rejoicing
grieving to congratulation
death to life
a great and wonderful change
Only those who have come face to face with death can appreciate this
A happy family gathering that night
This miracle is a proof of what Jesus can do for dead souls
Ephesians 2:1–5 NASB95
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

#4 The power of Christ is almighty

Can raise our children from the death of trespasses and sins, and make them walk before Him in newness of life
Can take our sons and daughters by the hand and say, “arise,” and instruct them not to live for themselves, but to Jesus, who died for them and rose again
Do you have a dead soul in your family? Call on the Lord
He that came to the aid of Jairus 2000 years ago is still full of mercy and mighty in power

Bringing it home: what Christ will do one day

This is a promise of what Christ will do when He comes again
He will call His people from their graves
He will give them a beautiful, healthy, new body
He will gather His people from north, south, east west - no more separation or death
Believing husbands shall once again see believing wives
The youngest and loveliest believer never dies before the right time.
Look forward - a glorious resurrection is coming
1 Thess 4:14 “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.”
He that raised the daughter of Jairus still lives
When He gathers His flock around Him on the last day, not one lamb will be missing
