Intro:
Have you ever been asked or told to do something (take out the trash, do laundry, clean the dishes, etc) and it always seems to right when you're in the middle of doing something you truly enjoy doing: reading, playing video games especially with your buddies online, watching your favorite tv show or movie, etc. No matter what it always seems to happen right at the climax or intense spot where you can't stop reading or watching? Or if you are playing a game with your online buddies, (of course you've never met face to face, but they are really good buddies) and if you have to get out of the game everyone will die and you don’t want to be shunned from the group.
Let's be honest, we all have. For the most part we will do it begrudgingly and half hearted just to please the person asking or ask if we can finished this one scene, chapter or level really quick.
**Story about the concrete company. Asked to go tie more cages while the other guy got to stand with the Skid steer and make sure the hole was perfect.**
Pray
Now let’s change the scenario a bit. Have you ever felt or heard the still small voice in the back of your head telling you to do not not something (and NO IM NOT TALKING ABOUT WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING YOU WERE TOLD NOT TO) but you're busy doing something else? I surely have and I'm not proud of it either.
For instance, at the grocery store and the person infant of you is struggling to find change for some groceries, and that voice pops in “pay for it for them, be a blessing” but you don’t.
Abraham - Genesis 22:1-2 This would be the voice in the back of our head right?
Follow along and I’ll do my best to tie everything together at the end.
Stories about those how were not after God’s heart
I’m going to make this as easy as I can
* Jonah- Jonah 1:1-10, Im not going to read the whole story.
*The take away is even though God spoke to him and the city repented, do you think Jonah did it with the right heart? In the next chapter
Lots wife Genesis 19:16-26 .
Gods angles told them to not look back, but she was so into what she had done there, she looked back with a be rebellious heart and God turned her to a pillar of salt
God gives and he takes away Job 1:21
WalMart contract was taken away from us
But how do we become a person who is after God’s heart
This is one of those easier said than done type things
* Luke 6:45-47 If this doesn’t explain it well enough than I don’t know what will.
There are certain verses I go to when I feel I need to get closer to God.
* Out of the heart the issues of life will be known Proverbs 4:23
* Apply your heart to instruction Proverbs 23:12
Look up stories/verses about people being after God's heart.
- Abraham - Genesis 22:10-13 This is result of Abraham listening to God.
- How about the pharisee and the publican Luke 18:9-14
History of the combination of heart and reins used in the Bible together
The use of these two words together is used 15 times in the Old Testament. Reins in Hebrew has two meanings in our 1611 KJV, one Kilyah literally means Kidney and the other Chalats means to pull off. Why are these so significant? Well, the word Kilyah or kidneys. Back in the Old Testament times the kidneys was believed to be where emotions came from. So if you really wanted to stretch the topic or meaning, they believed the kidneys is basically was their conscience or mind. In turn putting heart and reins or (kidneys) was them giving a more stern authority over to God to search their heart and their mind.
Isn’t that what we try and do today?
