Titus 1:10–16 KJV 1900
For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Last week we discussed that Paul wanted the the elders to maintain certain standards, do you remember why?
It was so that the leaders would keep the people at Crete in line, as they were grounded themselves
verse 10
Titus 1:10 KJV 1900
For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
Now when you hear Paul say “They of the circumcision” he is talking about the Jewish converts
He was saying that many Christians in Crete were deceptive, especially the Jewish ones
Why do you think it was important that Paul tell Titus about these vain talkers in verse 10?
Those who talk vain can easily deceive us
because they don’t care to run their mouth, they don’t care to lie they can get us in trouble
It is kind of like a false sense of security
If Titus let his guard down to much around the right person it could ruin his minsitry
which is why Paul warned him
the only other reason was that Titus needed to know what he was dealing with in Crete.
Titus 1:11 KJV 1900
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
So now Pual expands more on that second reason
They must be stopped he said.
What would someone who was a deceiver do in the likes of a well rounded church?
See now thats the reason i asked that quesiton in that way
In a well rounded church that wouldn’t affect them in the same way
because in a church where Jesus Christ is the centerpiece identifying the inconsistencies in a lie is much easier.
Though it is still important that even a well rounded church guard themselves
What do you think these actions would cause in a church that wasn’t well rounded?
Titus 1:12 KJV 1900
One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
