Text: Psalm 27

Introduction:

Throughout the Bible, many different themes and lessons are presented. Some of these themes include love, faith, mercy, patience, and obedience. Psalm 27 is a simple prayer of praise to God that covers many different applicable life lessons for Christians.

I. Faith (vs. 1-3)

A. God is bigger than all of life’s problems.

1. God is bigger than the boogeyman.
2. God is our light and salvation—he keeps bad things from happening to us.
3. God protects us from the dangers in the world.
4. If there is one thing we can be sure of, it is that God will never leave us nor forsake us.
5. We don’t have to worry about the outcome.

B. God is the strength of our lives.

1. Without God to help us through life, we would be miserable.
2. He is what gives us our hope in life.
3. In spite of everything, we can put our faith in God.

II. Obedience (vs. 4)

A. The true heart of a Christian is one that is obedient because he/she has a desire to be.

1. Not only does it take a strong desire to follow God’s will, it takes a lot of strength and willpower.
2. There are definite benefits from serving Christ.
a) Close fellowship with God.
b) Imagine the fellowship that Adam had with God.

B. Fellowship with God is dependent on obedience to God.

1. Notice that David said “One thing have I desired of the Lord, THAT I WILL SEEK AFTER, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life…’
a. God cannot do anything for you if you are not trying to draw close to him.
b. Unless you take a step for him and “open the door” to your heart, he stands outside knocking.

C. This supernatural love provided a home in eternity for those who fear God and accept his son Jesus Christ.

III. Love (vs. 5)

A. Christ will be there for you no matter what you are going through in your life.

1. God is our refuge in times of trouble.
2. Many times instead of seeking refuge from the storm, we run out to face it on our own.
a. We need to put our faith in God and let him handle the storms in our lives.
b. Sometimes God will send storms in our life so that we will run to him for help.
c. God will be there for us if we just “seek his face.”
3. Even when those who are close to us disappoint us, God is still faithful.
a. There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother; his name is Jesus.

B. God will not allow you to be destroyed.

1. He will allow trials, but (I Cor. 10:13)
“There is no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; But God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Conclusion

David gives us a good piece of advice for all of our life: “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he will strengthen your heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” It is important to realize that God’s timing is not our own. Be courageous in all you endeavor to do and be patient; God will be there for you. Will you put your faith in him today?
