Introduction
Charles Spurgeon was a baptist preacher from England in the 1800’s.
He was known as, “The Prince of Preachers”.
In his book, “All of Grace” he tells a story of a minister who was attempting to help a lady who was poor.
The Story is told by Spurgeon like this,
“A minister called upon a poor woman, intending to give her help; for he knew that she was very poor.
With his money in his hand, he knocked at the door; but she did not answer.
He concluded she was not at home, and went his way.
A little after he met her at the church, and told her that he had remembered her need: “I called at your house, and knocked several times, and I suppose you were not at home, for I had no answer.”
“At what hour did you call, sir?” “It was about noon.”
“Oh, dear,” she said, “I heard you, sir, and I am so sorry I did not answer; but I thought it was the man calling for the rent”.
Spurgeon continues, “.....Now, it is my desire to be heard, and therefore I want to say that I am not calling for the rent; indeed, it is not the object of this book to ask anything of you, but to tell you that salvation is ALL OF GRACE, which means, free, gratis, for nothing”.
Friend, I, like Spurgeon desire to tell you of the message of salvation.
The message may be uncomfortable and harsh but none the less, it must be told in hopes of saving souls from eternal punishment in hell.
God’s intention is not to harm or keep you from enjoying life.
His intention has always been and will be to rescue you from sin and death and to restore you to a right relationship with Himself.
Therefore, It is my prayer and hope that the Holy Spirit would stir the hearts of those who read and hear this message.
I’m going to cover four important truths.
They are, the holiness of God, the reality of man’s sin, the person and work of Jesus Christ, and God’s demand for all sinners.
The Holiness of God
If souls are ever to be saved there must be an honest understanding of the holiness of God.
You see friend, God demands reverential fear and respect.
Psalm 111:10 speaks of fearing God as the mark of true wisdom (see also Job 28:28; Proverbs 1:7, 9:10; 15:33; Micah 6:9).
This wisdom is very different from what the world gives.
Unless you have a reverential fear and respect for the Almighty You’ll never know the holiness of God.
Because God is perfectly Holy, He demands for us to be Holy as well (see Lev 11:44-45; 1 Samuel 6:20; Joshua 24:19).
Holiness means that God desires that we be separate from the world and be totally devoted to Him.
This means that we must separated ourselves from everything and anything that does not honor God.
Things like earthly pleasures, selfishness, pride, arrogance, and other behaviors should have no part in a believer’s life.
In addition to being holy we must understand that without Holiness no one can see the Lord (see Heb 12:14; 1 Peter 1:16).
God is Holy and Hates sin, sinners cannot stand before God while they are in their sinful condition (see Ex 20:5; Ps 1:5).
The reality of man’s sin
People need to understand their sinful nature.
In order to understand our sinful nature we must understand the origins of sin.
Actually, evil began in heaven before it did on earth.
In his book, “Systematic Theology”, Norman Geisler explains the origins of sin:
Actually, evil originated in heaven before it did on earth.
Evil was born in the breast of an archangel in the presence of God.
This is a tremendous mystery, but it is, nonetheless, the essence of Christian teaching on the source of evil.
The book of Isaiah explains how evil began:
Isaiah 14:12–14 (KJV)
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
As most people are well aware sin also began here on earth with Adam and Eve (see Genesis 3).
Adam and Even were deceived by satan in the Garden of Eden.
He uses the same lies on people today as he did with Adam and Eve to keep us from God.
He does this in our thoughts.
Because of Adam and Eve’s sin all people are inherently sinners (Rom 3:10-18).
We are born with a propensity to sin.
This may seem unfair however this is how it is.
Because people are born with this sinful nature, unbelievers cannot have true peace in their lives (Isa 57:20-21).
Also, because of sin, sinners deserve death (Rom 6:23; James 1:15).
There is nothing sinners can do to earn Salvation (Isa 64:6 cf.
Rom 3:20; Gal 2:16).
Finally, sinners must realize that their sin renders them helpless (Eph 2:1; Luke 12:2; Also see Rom 2:16; Heb 9:27; Rev 21:8).
These facts may seem heartless and cold however sinners must understand and accept this in order to be reconciled to God.
The Person and Work of Jesus Christ
Although a sinners condition is helpless there is hope and that hope is in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
If unbelievers are every to obtain Salvation they must fully understand and appreciate that Jesus is completely and eternally God (John 1:1-3, 14; cf.
Col 2:19).
In addition to Jesus being completely and eternally God we must also understand and appreciate that Jesus became a man (Phil 2:6-7).
Many people agree with this fact.
However, do they fully appreciate it in their heart.
You see Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son, Left His place with God the Father and became a man in order that he could carry out God’s plan of Salvation.
Friend, we should be at awe and amazement at the thought of Jesus humiliating Himself to become one of us in order to save our souls.
This is how much we are loved.
We also must surrender ourselves to the fact that Jesus Christ is Lord of all (Phil 2:9-11; Acts 10:36; Rev 17:14).
He is Lord of heaven and earth, He is Lord over every creature including man.
Not one thing escapes Him.
Jesus is omnipotent (all powerful), Omnipresent (everywhere), omniscience (all Knowing)(see Ps 139:7-13; Matt 8:27; Ps147:5).
There is one thing that Jesus has over any of us while He was a man and that is that he is pure and sinless (1 Pet 2:22-23; Heb 4:15; 1 John 3:5).
None of us can ever claim that status.
One of the greatest things Jesus ever did for mankind was to sacrifice Himself on the cross to save us from sin.
His atoning sacrifice for sin makes salvation possible (2 Cor 5:21; Eph 1:7-8; Col 1:20; Titus 2:14; 1 Pet 2:24; Rev 1:5).
Do you remember the movie, “the passion of the Christ”?
I remember going to see that movie in the theaters.
For me, it was very powerful and moving.
Theres something about seeing that moves us.
Oh, yes, we know the facts of Jesus’s death but until we see it with our own eyes we can never fully appreciate the measure of what He did.
The final work of Jesus was that He rose from the grave (Luke 24:5-8; 1Cor 15:3-4; Rom 4:25).
These works of Jesus are quite amazing.
They should show sinners how great God’s love is for them.
God’s demands of all sinners
In order for a sinner to obtain salvation what must he or she do?
God requires everyone to totally and completely forsake everything and anything they put there trust in and turn to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
This requires three essential and profound changes of heart, attitude, and behavior.
People must repent of their sin (Ezek 18:30,32; Acts 17:30).
Sinners must realize that they cannot claim the Kingdom of God until they forsake everything and anything that dishonors Him.
They must turn from Idolatry and follow Christ (1 Thess 1:9; Luke 9:23 cf.
v.62; John 12:26).
Idolatry is when we focus on something or someone more that we do God.
The idol could be a job, a car, money, even pleasure can be an idol.
whats Your idol.
The last thing one must do in order to obtain salvation is to trust in Christ as Lord and Savior (Rom 10:9; Acts 16:31).
Friend, these words that I have expressed to you are words from the heart.
It has and will always be the desire of my heart to see friends and loved ones go to heaven.
As I mentioned earlier God’s intention is not to harm or keep you from enjoying life.
His intention has always been and will be to rescue you from sin and death and to restore you to a right relationship with Himself.
