Let’s Go: “What Is Biblical Love?”

Mark 12:28-34

“But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.” Matthew 22:34

I. The Object of our Love – Part 1. (vs 28-30)

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.”

James 2:10

1. Know that “the Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

a. He is the Lord, Jehovah, Yahweh.

b. He is our God.

c. He is one Lord.

Isaiah 44:6

I Timothy 2:5

2. The Lord our God is to be loved.

a. A loving relationship demonstrates commitment and loyalty.

b. A loving relationship demonstrates trust and respect for the person loved.

c. A loving relationship demonstrates giving and surrendering.

II. The Object of our Love – Part 2. (vs 31)

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another...” John 13:34-35

1. There is a corrupt love for self.

2. There is a godly love for self.

Philippians 2:3-4

I Corinthians 13:4-7

III. The Object of our Love changes everything. (vs 32-34)

1. This biblical love causes us to think.

2. This biblical love is more meaningful than all our offerings and sacrifices.

3. This biblical love offers salvation to those who understand it.

FAITH SHEET QUESTIONS:

1. Which of the Ten Commandments do you consider the most important? Why?

2. Books and movies often tell us that love is the supreme virtue. How does their definition of love often fall short of the Bible’s emphasis?

3. Why is it important that God is “One”? Why did this cause the Jews to resist Jesus’ claims to be divine?

4. What do “heart, soul, mind, and strength” represent individually and collectively?

5. How would you respond to the person who says, “Jesus is telling us we need to learn how to love ourselves first and then to love others”?

6. How is obedience to these two great commands different from observance of religious ritual? How do you explain that God commanded Israel to observe sacrificial rituals?

7. How was Jesus an example of absolute love for God? How was He an example of perfect love for His neighbor?
