The Purpose of the Tabernacle

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

Exodus 25:9 ESV
Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.
Exodus 25:40 ESV
And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.
Exodus 39:42 ESV
According to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work.
Exodus 25:8 ESV
And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.

Points to the Incarnation

John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Points to the Heavens

Hebrews 9:23–24 ESV
Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

Points to the Church

1 Corinthians 3:16–17 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
Revelation 1:13 ESV
and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
Revelation 1:20 ESV
As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
Revelation 2:1 ESV
“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

The Names of the Temple

TABERNACLE

“The place of dwelling”

SHEKINAH GLORY

To represent the manifestations of the LORD in the pillar of fire and smoke.
“dwelling”

SANCTUARY

“the place of holiness”
Psalm 24:3–4 ESV
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

TEMPLE STRUCTURE

OUTER COURT

Open air and accessible to those in the covenant community

THE HOLY PLACE

Veiled and lit by lampstands
Only Priests

HOLY OF HOLIES

Completely Veiled with no light
Only the High Priest could enter once per year
Could never enter without a blood sacrifice
Hebrews 9:8–9 ESV
By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,
Hebrews 9:12 ESV
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

TEMPLE FURNITURE

The Altar, The Laver, and the Show Bread

THE ALTAR

Exodus 20:24–25 ESV
An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.
A Place of Righteous judgment

THE LAVER

Wash Basin
Exodus 38:8 ESV
He made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze, from the mirrors of the ministering women who ministered in the entrance of the tent of meeting.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
James 1:23–25 ESV
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

The Show Bread

“Bread of Faces”
“Presentation”
Leviticus 24:8 ESV
Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before the Lord regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever.
Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

The Lampstand

Psalm 36:9 ESV
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.
2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
John 8:12 ESV
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Matthew 5:14 ESV
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
John 1:9 ESV
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
Luke 11:13 ESV
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

THE ALTAR OF INCENSE

Last item before entering the holy of holies.
Fueled by coals from the altar of sacrifice.
The fragrance would be lifted up and into the holy of holies.
This was symbolic of the prayers of the people.
Psalm 141:2 ESV
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
Prayer is the means by which we gain access to the presence of God.
Prayer only rises to the Father because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

The only item in the Holy of Holies.
A box that symbolized the presence of the Lord with His people.
Two Key Points
The original tables containing the ten commandments kept within the Ark declared the righteous requirements of the law.
Upon the top and center stage was the “mercy seat” which proclaimed hope.
Jeremiah 3:16 ESV
And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again.
Romans 3:24–25 ESV
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
