State: Jesus’ final conversation with his disciples before his death
Jesus had just told his disciples that they were all going to desert him
John 16:32–33 NIV
32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus says significant things in this passage
1) State: Jesus said, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me”
He told them ahead of time that they would desert him
How was telling them that they would desert him bring peace?
Jesus wanted them to know that HE knew what would happen to them
So that.........
John: An Introduction and Commentary v. Jesus Speaks Plainly to His Disciples (16:25–33)

When afterwards the disciples felt ashamed and remorseful because they deserted Jesus in his time of need, they would be able to recall that he knew about these things beforehand and was still committed to them and still loved them. In this knowledge they could have peace in their relationship with him.

Notice that Jesus was not reprimanding them for their soon coming behavior
Jesus knew what they would do....and....he knows what you and I will do
And Jesus is still committed to you and me.
Jesus knows you and sees you and is committed to you.
Jesus saw Nathanael before he actually met him......
John 1:48 NLT
48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
State: That was a strong enough experience for Nathanael that he became a follower of Jesus
John 1:49 NLT
49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”
Psalm 139:16 NLT
16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
Psalm 139:3–4 NLT
3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.
Story of Hagar - Someone who was seen by God
Abraham is 75 years old when the promise from God is given that he will be a great nation
10 years later,..no children…so Sarah decides to fix the issue herself and has Abraham take Hagar as a wife
Ishmael is the result
It would be another 15 years before Issac is born through Sarah
Sarah is jealous of Hagar and the coming birth.....she “mistreats” Hagar, so Hagar flees
We pick it up in Genesis 16: 7-9
Genesis 16:7–9 NLT
7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring of water in the wilderness, along the road to Shur. 8 The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,” she replied. 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.”
It goes on to say
Genesis 16:11 NLT
11 And the angel also said, “You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the Lord has heard your cry of distress.
State: What could give Hagar the strength to return to her difficult situation?
Genesis 16:13 NIV
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
State: To know that God hears your thoughts and sees you
Jesus said to his disciples...
John 16:33 (NLT)
33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
Paul talks about this peace
Romans 8:6 NLT
6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
State: Letting your mind be controlled by the Spirit is remembering that...
Jesus sees you
Jesus knows what is coming (trials and sorrows)
Is with you in them and will not leave you abandoned
John 14:18 NLT
18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.
