Jesus Christ - Outline

This is the study about the ONE Who is the sum and substance, the center and the essence of Bible Christianity.

If we take Buddha from Buddhism, if we take Mohammed from Islam, if we take Smith from Mormonism,

we are still left with systems of belief. But if we take Jesus from Christianity we are left with nothing!

Christianity is not a system of beliefs but a PERSON. We are not saved through rules and rites, but through a PERSON!

This study looks at two things concerning Jesus Christ:

o WHO HE IS

o WHAT HE HAS DONE

1. Jesus Christ is the Perfect Man

A. Jesus was born of a woman. Look up Galatians 4:4

Galatians 4:4 KJV 1900
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

B. Look up Luke 2:5

Luke 2:5 KJV 1900
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Mary underwent a normal pregnancy – she was great with child.

C. Look up Luke 2:40 Throughout His childhood, Jesus grew in a normal way. And worried his parents in the normal way kids do… Luke 2:41-52

Luke 2:40 KJV 1900
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
Luke 2:41–52 KJV 1900
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

D. To the woman of Samaria, Jesus looked like a typical MAN - John 4:7-9

John 4:7–9 KJV 1900
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

E. Read Isaiah 53:2 This prophetic description of Jesus Christ tells us that He had no comeliness (pleasing in appearance; attractive;fair: a comely face.) or attractive beauty.

Isaiah 53:2 KJV 1900
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, And as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

According to Matthew 26:48 - 49

Matthew 26:48–49 KJV 1900
48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. 49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

, Jesus was so plain (ordinary?) that Judas had to kiss his cheek to identify him to the soldiers.

F. Look up John 4:6 ⁶ Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. Jesus experienced weariness.

G. Look up Matthew 8:24 Jesus required sleep.

Matthew 8:24 KJV 1900
24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

H. Look up Matthew 21:18 Jesus got hungry.

Matthew 21:18 KJV 1900
18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.

I. Look up Luke 22:44

Luke 22:44 KJV 1900
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Jesus suffered pain (agony) and sweat like we do.

J. Look up Hebrews 4:15 Jesus was tempted in all things – just like us.

Hebrews 4:15 KJV 1900
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

K. Look up II Corinthians 5:21

2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

L. Look up John 19:33: Jesus died a physical death.

John 19:33 KJV 1900
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

In the Bible, there are many more human attributes of Jesus (anger, etc.) not described here!

2. Jesus Christ is God

A. Look up: John 1:14

John 1:14 KJV 1900
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus is the “WORD”.

B. Look up John 1:1

John 1:1 KJV 1900
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

THE WORD (JESUS) WAS GOD.

C. Look up: John 5:18 Why did the Jews try and kill Jesus?.. Because Jesus said he was GOD.

John 5:18 KJV 1900
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

D. Look up John 5:23

John 5:23 KJV 1900
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

E. Look up John 10:30

John 10:30 KJV 1900
30 I and my Father are one.

F. Look up Look up John 10:31-33 The Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy (the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God.)

John 10:31–33 KJV 1900
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

G. Look up John 14:9 When we see Jesus, we see the Father.

John 14:9 KJV 1900
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

H. Look up John 20:28

John 20:28 KJV 1900
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Thomas said Jesus was Lord and God and Jesus DID NOT REBUKE HIM.

I. Look up Hebrews 1:1- 8

Hebrews 1:1–8 KJV 1900
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
(recommend reading from verse 1 since it’s so beautiful)

J. Look up I John 5:20 Jesus Christ is the true God and eternal life.

1 John 5:20 KJV 1900
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

K. Look up Titus 1:3-4 Our Saviour.

Titus 1:3–4 KJV 1900
3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

L. Compare:

i. Genesis 1:1

Genesis 1:1 KJV 1900
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

ii. and John 1:3

John 1:3 KJV 1900
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Conclusion: Jesus is GOD.

3. Jesus Christ was Born of a Virgin

From what you have learned above, The Lord Jesus Christ is a man and He is God.

He is not 60% human and 50% divine, but is 100% perfect in His humanity and 100% perfect in His Deity. How is this?? He is God made Man! Although we struggle to comprehend this fact, it is a fact clearly taught in the Bible.

A Look up I Timothy 3:16 This verse says Jesus is God manifested in flesh.

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Remembering back to bible study and the Bible teaching of One God manifested in 3 persons. In studying Jesus, we must appreciate the fact of One Person with Two Natures - a divine nature and a human nature. While we can never understand this truth, we can see how it was accomplished in the Virgin Birth of Christ.

i. If Jesus had a human mother and a human father, He would just be another man - sinful, needing to be saved, and totally incapable of saving Himself, let alone others.

ii. If Jesus had no human mother and no human father, He would be unapproachable as God - holy, and dwelling in light inaccessible.

iii. The Bible teaches Jesus to be the SON OF MARY and THE SON OF GOD.

B. Look up Isaiah 7:14

Isaiah 7:14 KJV 1900
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.

. This Old Testament prophecy of Christ declared that a virgin would conceive. (Isaiah: 740 BC -698 BC)

B. Look up: Romans 5:8

Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

E. Jesus was born of God and a virgin to avoid having original sin… Jesus had to be a perfect sinless sacrifice.

4. The Death of the Lord Jesus Christ

5. The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

A. Look up John 20:1

John 20:1 KJV 1900

Jesus arose the first day of the week or our Sunday (what does this signify?)

B. Look up Matthew 12:40

Matthew 12:40 KJV 1900
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus was in the tomb (dead) for 3 days. (this proves he was dead).

C. Look up I Corinthians 15:3-8

1 Corinthians 15:3–8 KJV 1900
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

D. Look up Romans 4:25 Jesus was raised from the dead to JUSTIFY us.

Romans 4:25 KJV 1900
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

E. Look up and study: I Peter 1:3-5 (read through verse 5 because its cool)

1 Peter 1:3–5 KJV 1900
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

according to this scripture, because of the glorious resurrection of Christ, each believer has a "lively" (living) HOPE of a wonderful inheritance, RESERVED IN HEAVEN.

6. The Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ

A. When did Jesus return to Heaven? Look up: Acts 1:3-9

Acts 1:3–9 KJV 1900
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

B. Where is Jesus at this present time? Look up Hebrews 10:12

Hebrews 10:12 KJV 1900

C. Jesus is making intersession for each believer. Look up Hebrews 7:25

Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

D. Jesus is preparing a place for each of us who are saved. Look up John 14:2

John 14:2 KJV 1900
2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

E. When a Christian sins, Jesus is an advocate with the Father. Look up I John 2:1

1 John 2:1 KJV 1900
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

7. The Return of the Lord Jesus Christ

[This subject will be studied in more detail in a later Study}

A. Jesus said I will come again. Look up John 14:3

John 14:3 KJV 1900
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

B. Who promised the return of Christ here? Look up Acts 1:10- 11

Acts 1:10–11 KJV 1900
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
(from verse 10)

C. The return of the Lord Jesus Christ is called the Blessed Hope. Look up Titus 2:13

Titus 2:13 KJV 1900
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

D. Carefully Study I Thessalonians 4:16 – 17

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 KJV 1900
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

E. Look up I Corinthians 15:51 – 52

1 Corinthians 15:51–52 KJV 1900
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

When Christ returns for His people, how quickly will this event transpire? ... in the twinkling of an eye.
