Main Point
Our weakness reveals to us God’s strength, illuminating his glory in every aspect of our lives.
Introduction
The weight of the brokenness of the world is felt by us daily.
We suffer, we see others suffer day in and day out.
Covid, murder, losing loved ones, and much more (share Dillon story).
Is there any purpose in this, or is all just meaningless?
Is God powerless to stop it, or is he doing something with it?
The scripture gives us hope here.
The Sufferings of This Present Time
Paul wrote this a long time ago, and yet “this present time” still applies to us now.
These sufferings are “not worth comparing” to the glory to come.
Hebrews 12:1-2
Our future is bright, come what may.
App: Suffering is going to happen, but how we endure it depends on eternal perspective.
The recreation of all things and the joy of heaven dwarf the current suffering we will endure.
We enhance our hope in this by once again reminding ourselves of the gospel.
If the Bible’s teaching about these things is a “fairy tale” to you, then you will have trouble seeing Paul’s point here.
Creation’s Longing
All that God has made is waiting in anticipation for God to end this curse once for good.
Because of the fall and sin entering the world, everything is broken.
Everything was subjected to futility, and God himself subjected it to this state, with the purpose of redeeming it all for the glory of his name.
God has used the fall to make much of himself and express another part of his nature, namely, that he is a redeemer.
Groaning with the pains of child birth is actually pointing to new life, not death.
We, God’s people, grown inwardly with creation.
The very bodies we have now will be redeemed and remade just as creation will be redeemed and remade.
Christians long for this reality, and Paul is making the point that though our longing and suffering can seem unbearable at times during our waiting, it will be incomparable to the beauty of it actually happening.
It is worth the wait!
The whole point of hope like this is to trust in something we have not seen yet.
App: Our inward groaning is how we long for God to fix this broken world.
But if this truly is our hope, then we must wait for it with patience.
The Spirit Helps Us In Our Weakness
The same Spirit that assures us of our salvation actually helps us where we are lacking (sanctification).
App: We do not like to admit that we have weaknesses.
Cobra Kai illustration with Kreese.
But the reality is that our weaknesses are where the Spirit of God shows up, and thus our weaknesses are precious gifts.
You are doing yourself no favors by pretending you are not weak.
We can’t even pray rightly, and therefore God the Holy Spirit intercedes for us.
The Spirit prays for us according to the perfect will of God, though it may be clouded to us at times, it never is to him who lives in us.
Invincible Redemption
All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purposes.
Is it possible for God to do anything without purpose and he still be God?
I think not.
App: All things working together for good does not mean that all things will feel good or be good on the surface, but rather in the ultimate sense.
This is what Paul means when he says the suffering is not worth comparing to what is to come.
And he wants to give us hope that even the suffering is not without purpose.
The golden chain of redemption.
This is how God has saved us (briefly explain each chain link).
App: Notice that all of this chain of redemption is the work of God.
He foreknew, he predestined, he called, he justified, and he glorified.
Rejoice in the work of God and squash your pride.
Closing
See how completely he has saved us from our sin!
He has left no loose ends, not even your current sanctification.
He who began the good work in you will complete it!
God is full of purpose, and now amount of brokenness in this world is meaningless.
He is doing work in it all, and that work is turning out for your good and his glory.
