Walk in the New life

Bishop is in a new teaching series right now
Assignment: how to eradicate guilt while walking in the newness of life
scripture reference :
Colossians 1:21-22 “21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—”
situation In the text
Paul writing to the Church at Colossae about how they used to be used strong language
to describe how these people used to be before coming to Christ
want to spend a little time going through and dissecting the text
Formerly Alienated (Greek word means estranged to belong to another or excluded) ἀπαλλοτριόω
formerly changes the meaning being estranged or excluded
difference between being alienated by design from being that way on purpose
message bible says: At one time you all had your backs turned to God
you are the cause of your alienation because of sin
Colossians 1:21 (NASB95)
21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,
hostile (Greek word means Hated, unfriendly, antagonistic) ἐχθρός
This is the strongest terms possible. showing dislike or opposition
so it refers to deep seated hatred for God. We were enemies of God
Romans 8:7 “7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,” Uses the same Greek Word
We had no desire for him
This hostility in this text takes place in the mind! not the physical brain but the critical thinking part
so this text is saying we were actually strangers, alienated, separated belonging to another
and also hostile in our thinking process towards God
this condition of the mind caused us to engaged in evil deeds (works of the flesh)
The Good or the positive in all that news in the text
Colossians 1:22 (NASB95)
22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
YET now he has reconciled in his fleshly body
Now this is a reminder if the finished work of the cross
the reality of what the cross accomplished
that verb reconcile in this context is bringing the two enemies together in relationship.
God being holy and righteous and perfect reconciled Men back to himself
the fact God can take what we once were, a waring party someone that hated him, was hostile towards him in the mind and thought process was separate from him belonging to the enemy and still reconcile him
How is the reconciliation done? how is this accomplished ?
In his fleshly body through death
He satisfied the justice of God
then God could reconcile us to himself
But not only that
He wants to present us Holy
He wants to present us as Blameless
And He wants to present us as faultless
complication
problem is that even though God has done all of those things
It doesn’t always remove the guilty feeling
when you are generally converted you will feel guilty because now you have a new nature with the Holy Spirit living inside
2 cor 5:17 “17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
your sensitivity to sin is increased more than ever before
when i was in sin I didn't have a problem with my sin. I didn't think it was a Big deal
-David didn't think what he did the Bathsheba was a big deal until Nathan pointed it out to him
I feel guilty about bringing children into the world out of wedlock because I look at them today and see the effect of my decision
Do any of you feel guilty about something from your past?
and we have a whole chapter in the book of Psalm 51 that tells us how sensitive to sin David became
ps51:4 “4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.”
resolution
How do we remove this guilt the biblical way?
Confess our Sin tell the truth
1 john 1:9-10 “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”
preacher friend that said he has not sinned since salvation
read and study
psalm 51:3-4 “3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.”
the posture of repentance that David Had
Psalm 32:5 NASB95
5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.
Trust the promise of God
1 john 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Romans 8:1 “1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
reject the guilty feelings and meditate
Psalm 103:8-12 “8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. 9 He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
thank you for this day and this class
thank you for your word is the truth and not a lie
thank you for your spirit that leads us to that truth
we ask you to help for us who may be struggling with guilt from the past
help us to stand on what your word to meditate on your word to trust your word Father
that there is no condemnation for us who are in Jesus and belong to you
that you truly have forgiven our sin when we come to you with our confession
that you have removed sin as far as the east is from the west
