John 17:1 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
Jesus was preparing His disciples for His death
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
“Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven”
And said… Father
Jesus started His prayer.... Recognizing God as Father
Is He your Father?
“The hour has come”
The divine plan of redemption was at God’s appointment
“Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you”
Glorify: To positively acknowledge, recognize, or esteem one’s character, nature or attributes.
This request for glorification included:
Positively acknowledge me through - Sustaining Jesus in suffering,
Esteem me through Accepting His sacrifice,
Get the glory out of Resurrecting Him,
and restoring Him to His pristine glory.
Jesus glorified God through displaying His wisdom, power, and love.
John 9:3 ESV
Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.
I’m in it but God is going to get the Glory out of it!
My life is going to show the mighty works of God
John 17:2 ESV
since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
Jesus’ prayer request was in accordance with the Father’s plan.
Good news! He still has authority over all flesh!
“To give eternal life”
The Greek word for Eternal doesn’t have to do much with duration of life, but with quality of life.
There is only one person to whom the word aiōnios can properly be applied, and that is God.
Eternal life is, therefore, is nothing other than the life of God.
To possess it, to enter into it, is to experience here and now something of the splendour, and the majesty, and the joy, and the peace, and the holiness which are characteristic of the life of God.
Eternal life starts now… It’s about the quality of life...
“All whom you have given me”
Romans 8:29–30 ESV
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
“This is eternal life”
#1 “That they know you - The only true God”
Know - A person who knows God has an intimate personal relationship with Him.
A sexual relationship
And that relationship is eternal, not temporal.
Eternal life is not simply endless existence.
Everyone will exist somewhere forever (cf. Matt. 25:46), but the question is, In what condition or in what relationship will they spend eternity?
(The Bible Knowledge Commentary)
John 17:4 ESV
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
I love this verse!!!!!
Doing the work of the Father brings glory to the Father
John 17:5 ESV
And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
“With the glory that I had with you”
glory (state) n. — a state of high honor.
John 17:6–7 ESV
“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
“I have manifested” -
to make manifest v. — to cause to become clearly revealed to the mind, the senses, or judgment.
Jesus was focused…
Jesus came to clearly do the work of the Father!
John 5:30 ESV
“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
Jesus was focused…
“Yours they were - and you gave them to me”
Your they were - I’m His
A true picture of a Leader under leadership!
“They kept your word”
The disciples were not perfect, but they had the right commitment.
Their faith in Jesus was a trust in His union with the Father
John 17:8–9 ESV
For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
“I am praying for them”
“For they are yours”
John 17:10–11 ESV
All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.
“All mine are your, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.”
That’s why are life brings Glory to God....
“Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me.”
Why do we want to be kept by the power of His name....
So we can be one.... Just as God and Jesus are one!
I pray for Unity:
In our Home
In relationships
In our church
In our ministries.....
John 17:12–13 ESV
While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
“That they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves”
They may have my joy....
joy (emotion) n. — the emotion of great happiness and pleasure.
What is His Joy?
Hebrews 12:2 ESV
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
I was His Joy!!!!
Jesus wants His joy fulfilled in us!!!!
Seeing transformation happen in the lives of others....
John 17:14–15 ESV
I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world”
I have work for them to do.....
Keep them from the evil one!
