GOOD PURPOSE
GOOD PURPOSE
14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
PRAY
INTRO: We’ve enjoyed a wonderful Week of Prayer. Theme: One Accord!
We learned about PURPOSE.
We are CALLED to live for His PURPOSE. We must learn how to live.
So we go to the B-I-B-L-E for guidance.
2:14–16 - give specific instructions on how to FULFILL God’s “GOOD PURPOSE” in daily Christian living. = CALLING.
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT ASSESSMENT.
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT ASSESSMENT.
Everything must be done without grumbling or arguing (v. 14).
DO = continually; at all times.
“GRUMBLING” = bad attitude.
God warns against GRUMBLING.
EX 16 &17 - Grumbled about Provision. Food and water.
NUM 14:1-4 Grumbled about Leadership.
Numbers 13 - Grumbled about Personal Life of the leader.
In all these cases the people were grumbling against God AND God didn’t like it.
“Arguing”- exchange or express diverging or opposite views, typically in a heated or angry way. Philippians 4:2 - Euodia and Syntyche.
Before our testimony for Christ can ever be effective in the community, the CHURCH needs to set some things straight in their own house.
SO - Do EVERYTHING with the Right Assessment.
Appreciative - 1 Thess 5:18 “18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Accept Authority - Heb 13:7 “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”
Assist positively - let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT APPEARANCE. (15a)
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT APPEARANCE. (15a)
Like the Philippian church, the Church today needs to show ourselves united as one in Christ.
We are to have COMPLETE Christian character. We are His children.
We live in a morally-crooked, distorted world. Many people have turned their backs on God and truth.
Non-Christians were not being attracted to Him by the saints’ FUSSING.
That’s why our lives are to be Blameless - “above reproach.”
Not mean sinless perfection; but innocent of intentional wrong.
We are to live so that those outside of Christ will not rightfully point an accusing finger at us.
Not just for show, but from the heart. We are Children of God…He has changed our heart from one of faithlessness to faithfulness.
Notice - “you may BECOME...” We haven’t arrived!
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE. (15b)
IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE. (15b)
Paul’s discussion concerned moral conduct which reflects the Gospel.
The phrase “shine like starts in the sky” refers to the Church is to be a light to the world.
Why stars in the sky? You look up.
Take the attention off you…put the attention on God.
CLOSE: IN ORDER TO FULFILL GOD’S GOOD PURPOSE WE MUST HAVE THE
RIGHT ASSESSMENT
RIGHT APPEARANCE
RIGHT ATTITUDE
God’s sovereign plan is to use His Word, through His people, to transform His enemies into His friends by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit.
The “day of Christ” is coming.
The Rapture when the Savior returns and meets His own in the air (1 Thes. 4:13–18). .
