The Master of Deception

Joshua 9:1–27 NKJV
1 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side of the Jordan, in the hills and in the lowland and in all the coasts of the Great Sea toward Lebanon—the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—heard about it, 2 that they gathered together to fight with Joshua and Israel with one accord. 3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4 they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, 5 old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy. 6 And they went to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us.” 7 Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell among us; so how can we make a covenant with you?” 8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you, and where do you come from?” 9 So they said to him: “From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God; for we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt, 10 and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 11 Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants; now therefore, make a covenant with us.” ’ 12 This bread of ours we took hot for our provision from our houses on the day we departed to come to you. But now look, it is dry and moldy. 13 And these wineskins which we filled were new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.” 14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. 15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them. 16 And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them. 17 Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim. 18 But the children of Israel did not attack them, because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained against the rulers. 19 Then all the rulers said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel; now therefore, we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them: We will let them live, lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we swore to them.” 21 And the rulers said to them, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them.” 22 Then Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell near us? 23 Now therefore, you are cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves—woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.” 24 So they answered Joshua and said, “Because your servants were clearly told that the Lord your God commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were very much afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 And now, here we are, in your hands; do with us as it seems good and right to do to us.” 26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they did not kill them. 27 And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, in the place which He would choose, even to this day.
Ephesians 6:10–11 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
“Wiles” Craftiness, strategies, “A cunning device”
The devil will use people that we don’t expect .
People can be so deceptive, but some are so good at it, that it can cause you to make bad decisions.
And the devil is behind it all deception. He is the master of all deception. Deception can be harmful.

The Enemy devises Vs 1-13

Joshua 9:1–13 NKJV
13 And these wineskins which we filled were new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”
There was victory, defeat, victory, there was recommencement. Now there will deception.
We need to remember the devil is a deceiver, he is a liar. He will attack at different times, and different methods of attaching.
Anytime you have victory, be guard. Why? If we are not careful, when things are going good. when there victory, we tend to let our guard down.
VS 1”And it came to pass” A change of invents.
The kings from other places had heard about the Israelites. Elab
They know that they are next, so they need to work together.
Look at vs 2 “With one accord”
They were in agreement.
They not really friends, but they knew they had to work together or be destroyed
Joshua 9:3–5 NKJV
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4 they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, 5 old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
Their goal is to get the Israelites to sign a deal with them. How could they do this? By tricking them. By being deceitful.
Genesis 3:1 NKJV
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
VS 3 Elab
VS 4-5
They used wisdom (not Godly) shrewdness. They work together. THEY LIED.
Look over verses.
They made themselves to look like they had traveled many miles and days. But they had only traveled about 6 miles. (Gibeon) This was the next city to be distorted.
Joshua was to destroy them.
Deuteronomy 20:17 (NKJV)
17 but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as the Lord your God has commanded you,
The devil wants us to disobey God. And he will devise us to get us to do so.
Eve.
Genesis 3:2–5 NKJV
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:6 (NKJV)
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
What Joshua and the people saw when these men showed up (go over verses 4-5 again) was devising.
The devil makes things look good. He wants to trick us (followers of Jesus) to do what we should not do.
He knows he can’t have us. Elab’
John 10:28 NKJV
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
But he can cause us to lose our witness.
1 Peter 5:8 NKJV
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
“seeking whom he may devour”
Peter was speaking from experience. Elab on him denying Jesus.
Have you ever denied Jesus?
Look at Peter 5:8 Saran wants you and I to fall. He wants us to live in fear. Doubt.
That’s why he comes after us not like a kitten, but a roaring Lion.
Matthew 7:15 NKJV
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
Some may dress up as their false look. These men dressed down.
Not only was their dress deceiving, but so were their words.
Joshua 9:6–9 (NKJV)
6 And they went to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us.”
7 Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell among us; so how can we make a covenant with you?”
8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you, and where do you come from?”
9 So they said to him: “From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the Lord your God; for we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt,
Some people are good talkers. By that I mean, those that are deceiving with their words.
Smooth talkers.
Look at the words of these men in VS 9
“Because of the name of the Lord your God”
Just because someone uses the name of God, or the name of Jesus, doesn't make them Godly.
The devil will use, RELIGIONS.
There many, many false religions.
Matthew 7:15 (NKJV)
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
J.W
LDS
They say what seems to be right. They talk about Jesus, but what they believe about Jesus is right. They believe that Jesus is God. Virgin birth. Trinity.
Some of the things they say sound like Christians. “They have the same vocabulary, but they have a different dictionary”
But it also some are considered Evangelical pastors that stand behind a pulpit, read from Gods word, but teach false teachings.
Things like, just be baptized, as long as you believe, just do your best, be a good person, ............
Matthew 7:21–23 NKJV
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Cults, false teachers, groups that do good things may read the bible but not be Christian.
Just because someone reads from the bible doesn't mean they teach the Bible. You either teach the truth or a lie.
They may say the right things but still have no relationship with Jesus. If they do not teach the truth, they teach a lie.
These men lied.
They lied in he clothes the were wearing.
They lied their wine, bread.
They lies about where they came from.
They lied about God. They said we heard about your God.
We’ve come along ways, we heard about our God and what He has done for you, make a covenant with us.
Joshua 9:10–13 NKJV
10 and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 13 And these wineskins which we filled were new, and see, they are torn; and these our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”

The People devised. VS 14-27

Joshua 9:14–15 (NKJV)
14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord.
15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
The leaders make a really bad decision.
This is one they would have to live with.
First they did not pray. What a huge mistake.
We make bad decision sometimes because we do no take time to pray.
We have to pray, read His word, seek His wisdom and guidance and His will.
Joshua and His men (leaders) did not pray. They were fooled by these men. What they were saying matched what they looked like. It seemed to add up.
They took the men word and what they saw, but they did not ask God.
Just like at Ai, they walk by sight and not by faith.
They didn’t because things had been going good for them. Victory, recommitted to God, these look like they had traveled far, they spoke about God.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)
17 pray without ceasing,
This week at work, Rafael was out. I prayed.
Pray when you have decisions to make.
Pray when things are good.
Pray when things are bad.
Joshua and His men did not pray.
Prayer defeats satan. Lack of prayer allows him to get his foot in the door.
When we do not pray and make bad decisions, we will at some point see our mistake.
Joshua 9:16 (NKJV)
16 And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them.
Joshua, oops. But He kept His word. But he is going to have a task for then for lying.
Joshua 9:17–18 (NKJV)
17 Then the children of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath Jearim.
18 But the children of Israel did not attack them, because the rulers of the congregation had sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained against the rulers.
READ AND ELAB
Joshua 9:19–21 NKJV
19 Then all the rulers said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel; now therefore, we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them: We will let them live, lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we swore to them.” 21 And the rulers said to them, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, as the rulers had promised them.”
Joshua 9:27 (NKJV)
27 And that day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, in the place which He would choose, even to this day.
Joshua was deceived, but he kept His word and did not destroy them. They become their slaves.
Lesson to learn.
Beware to the Deception of the devil. (He is the master)
H.W Eph 6:10-18
When you are in Gods word. Praying Gods word. Seeking God for wisdom. Asking God strength, the less likely you are for fall for the devils deception.
James 4:7 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
