Picture hand out (Old Man vs New Man)

This is foundational in understanding the Spiritual Warfare that we as believers are in. So many Christians fail to understand this basic biblical principle that as soon as one becomes a born again believer in Jesus Christ we become the enemy of the one who owned us from our birth, Satan Himself.

Definition Of Spiritual Warfare:
The struggle against the forces of evil, which is a constant feature of the life of faith. Scripture locates the origins of spiritual warfare in the rebellion of Satan and his angels against God and affirms the hope of God’s final victory over such forces through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.
Causes of Spiritual Warfare:
Spiritual Warfare has its origin in a rebellion of many angels against God. Satan is seen as the prince of this world, leading an array of forces opposed to God. Although disarmed by Jesus Christ on the cross, they remain a powerful threat to the church and to individual believers.
Ephesians 2:1-3
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Who exactly are the evil forces?
Christians are at war with the flesh (old man), the world and the devil.
Today we will look at the enemy of the flesh
Galatians 5:17 NASB95
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
1 Peter 2:11 NASB95
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.
James 4:1 NASB95
What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?
Romans 6:12 NASB95
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,
We must remember this fact and what we have studied up until this point in class:
Galatians 5:24 NASB95
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Paul gives us a very personal example of this war! Romans 7:14-25

Obviously he was describing his present conflict as a Christian with indwelling sin and its continuing efforts to control his daily life. The clause, “sold under sin” (KJV), describes an unregenerate person; but sin also resides in a believer, who is still subject to sin’s penalty of physical death. As a result, indwelling sin continues to seek to claim what it considers its property even after one has become a Christian.

*Next week we will take a look at the other two evil forces we are in battle with:
The world and the devil....
