But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine:
that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;
the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—
that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded,
in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,
sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back,
Introduction
Introduction
So what comes into your mind if i say this “the early church assigned gender roles”?
the early church actually assigned genders to act in certain manners and to carry our certain responsibilities.
Due to this the men and women had a very big responsibility, one of the biggest of all.
So lets look at this responsibility
But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine:
So to introduce chapter two Paul introduces to us the continuation of chapter 1 before going into chapter two.
Paul said to Titus that he was to continue to speak the things that are sound doctrine.
What does it mean that Paula asked that he speak the things that are sound doctrine?
Paul simply wanted Titus to remain sound and focused on God and pass that information on to the people at Crete.
So now he is going to discuss in the next couple of verses what Christians should look like.
that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;
Paul instructs that aged men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love and in patience.
Sober was not to be a drunk.
In this context to be reverent was to be in deep love and respect for the father.
Tempe rant was to maintain their anger and be self controlled
Sound in Faith was to have a good relationship with the father.
Sound in love was to show a character of love.
Sound in patience was to display a character of patience.
Why do you think these qualities were expected of the aged men?
These qualities were expected because these were the qualities that a Christian man who is trying to like Jesus Christ looks like.
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Paul gives similar instructions to the aged women,
But they are slightly different,
Can you explain the differences between aged men and aged women? Why were they different?
Now something I want to talk about here is where Paul tells Titus the women are to be teachers of good things.
Some will tell you that woman are automatized to teach.
Well the Bible approves this here but not in the way that some false teachers say
Does anyone know what Paul is trying to say about women teachers here?
Paul is encouraging the women to teach because the women are expected to teach.
They are expected to teach children and other women.
In fact just as you are about to see one of the biggest responsibilities of aged women is to teach the younger women.
that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
Paul doesn’t just authorize women to teach, he expects it.
He expects them to teach the young women especially how to be sound Christians.
Ones who love and respect their husband, ones who are sober and Godly mothers.
Paul gives a lot of expectations to the women.
You see naturally the world was designed so that the women would pass down the truth of the word of God
Because woman have so much relation with their children and impact so many lives so deeply their calling is very important.
So these are what the young men are called to be.
sober minded, good works, uncorrupt, reverent, incorruptible, sound speech,
and lastly
Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back,
So Paul gives five callings here
one to aged men
one to aged women
one to young women
one to young men
and one to the slaves
What I hope you have seen through this is there is a natural order of how God intended things that are very much based on gender and spiritual maturity.
Why do you think that the Bible places these expectations?
The men and the women have individual places where they fit God;s design
While the women have been placed in a home life location where they are expected to live in a certain way, teaching it to the young women and the children. The men are called to be more vocal and outstanding.
Both men and women were both called to essentially the same thing, if both do it well the word of God will be strengthened.
