What is the most important aspect of the Kingdom of God? The most defining feature of His Kingdom?
It is the King.
We can understand many things about the Kingdom of God but if we do not know the King, we miss what the Kingdom of God is all about, we will miss the very heart of the Kingdom.
One goal: That we would behold the King in all His glory and that He would be of greater value to us than all the things of this world!
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Matthew 7:24–27 ESV
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
What do we need to know most about Christ as King?
In all three of these ways, Christ is not the King that we expect, He isn’t even the King that we would choose, but He is the King that we need.
He is a holy King.
Colossians1:15-23
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Hebrews 7:26 ESV
26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
2. He is a humble King.
Philippians 2:5-11
2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
Mark 10:42–45 ESV
42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
3. He is a heavenly King.
John 18:36 ESV
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
1 Timothy 6:13–16 ESV
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
Revelation 19:11–16 ESV
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
Is this the Christ that you know? Or have you manufactured some other Christ in your mind who looks nothing like this holy, humble, heavenly King?
Have you fashioned a King in your own image, one who is just like you?
If so, that is no King but only an idol.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
On that final day only one thing will matter, Did we know Him? Did we really know Him? What was the evidence that we knew Him? Was there the fruit of repentance?
To profess Christ as Lord is one thing, to practically live as if He is Lord is another.. For your profession to be real it must be followed by practice.
There is no such thing as a nominal Christian, that is an utter impossibility!
To think that we could come into contact with the risen King, without being fundamentally and radically changed shows a very low view of Christ on our part! It shows that we do not really know the King!
Let us at last cast off this cultural christianity, this nonsense that says I can believe in Jesus and live however I want. No you can’t!
Because you don’t belong to yourself anymore, you have been crucified with Christ and you no longer live but Christ lives in you. You are no longer a slave of sin but a slave of Christ.
You say that you are a Christian? Good! Then prove it by the way that you live!
Repent and believe the Gospel of the Kingdom.
Let us repent of our apathy.
Repent of our hardheartedness.
Repent of our selfishness.
Repent of our neglect of God’s Word.
Repent of our neglect of prayer.
Repent of our worldliness.
Repent for our time is short and there is much work to be done.
