Jesus didn’t give this prayer to be recited over and over. In fact, He gave it to keep us from using vain repetitions (vs. 7-8).
He did not say “pray these words”, He said “in this manner…pray”. In other words, He was giving us this prayer as a pattern, not a substitute.

Recognize who you are praying to

He is God, our heavenly father. That makes Him:
All powerful (omnipotent)
God has all power, and can do whatever He wills.
Job 42:2
Job 42:2 NKJV
“I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
Psalm 135:6
Psalm 135:6 NKJV
Whatever the Lord pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.
All knowing (omniscient)
God has perfect knowledge of all things.
Job 21:22
Job 21:22 NKJV
“Can anyone teach God knowledge, Since He judges those on high?
Psalm 139:1-4
Psalm 139:1–4 NKJV
O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
Inescapable, everywhere all the time (omnipresent)
Psalm 139:7-10
Psalm 139:7–10 NKJV
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
Hebrews 4:13
Hebrews 4:13 NKJV
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
He is holy and righteousness
He is distinct from His creation, perfect, totally righteous, and has a completely incorruptible nature.
Leviticus 10:1-3
Leviticus 10:1–3 NKJV
Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ ” So Aaron held his peace.
Psalm 19:7-9
Psalm 19:7–9 NKJV
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
Given the nature of God to whom we are praying, He deserves recognition for who He is, and we need to address Him accordingly.

Pray for the establishment of His kingdom, and the fulfillment of His will.

Remembering that prayer is ultimately all about God, the most important thing is that we are seeking His will.
Jesus prayed:
Luke 22:42
Luke 22:42 NKJV
saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
Scripture tells us that Jesus will return, and that He will establish His kingdom and enforce His will. This requires His will to be done in the meantime, as well.
This is the ultimate end to which we must be praying. We should be seeking His will in every prayer.

Pray for your daily needs to be met.

We need only be concerned with one day at a time.
Matthew 6:34
Matthew 6:34 NKJV
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Relying on Him on a daily basis, will keep us praying on a daily basis.

Pray for forgiveness

We first need forgiveness for our sins.
1 John 1:9
1 John 1:9 NKJV
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We need to forgive others.
Mark 11:25
Matthew 6:14-15
Mark 11:25 NKJV
“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
Matthew 6:14–15 NKJV
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Pray for protection from temptation.

Satan will tempt us. God will protect us.
James 4:7
James 4:7 NKJV
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Ephesians 6:11-17
Ephesians 6:11–17 NKJV
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Acknowledge that all power and glory belong to God

Yours is the kingdom
He is sovereign and Lord, because He has a kingdom.
Revelation 19:16
Revelation 19:16 NKJV
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
the power
He is God because He has all power.
the glory
Because He is the sovereign Almighty God, He is in total control, so all glory belongs to Him.
Psalm 19:1
Psalm 19:1 NKJV
The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Isaiah 6:3
Isaiah 6:3 NKJV
And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
forever and ever
God is eternal. His power and authority will never end.
Job 36:26
Job 36:26 NKJV
“Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him; Nor can the number of His years be discovered.
John 8:58
John 8:58 NKJV
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Revelation 1:8
Revelation 1:8 NKJV
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Paul echoes each of these thoughts.
1 Timothy 6:13-16
1 Timothy 6:13–16 NKJV
I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
This is why we must recognize and address God for who He is, when we approach Him in prayer.
