“Anointing Uncovered”
Luke 3:16 “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But someone mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
This past Sunday the message was on all three of this evening’s passages, and we discovered that oftentimes what God decrees is different than what our eyes see.
This evening, however, our focus will be upon this one verse — John said, “I baptized you with water. But someone mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John’s reference to “fire” (πυρί) in connection with the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was to a purifying fire which burns away all unholiness (Isa 6:6, 7; 1 Pe 1:7). The tongues of fire on the heads of the disciples on Pentecost were certainly a symbol of this holy fire.
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look, this has touched your lips, so your guilt is taken away, and your sin is forgiven.”
7 so that the proven character of your faith—which is more valuable than gold, which passes away even though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
