So Far in Hebrews, the Author Has Focused on How Jesus is Superior to the Angels
Jesus is God’s Son
This Carried Many Meanings to it
The Hebrews Author Hones in On:
Jesus is God’s Anointed King - Messiah
He Shares the Divine Nature and is Worshiped
He Rules Over Over the World He Created
He Sits at the Right Hand of His Father in Heaven
Last Time We Saw How the Author Quotes Psalm 8 for the Purpose of Proving that Jesus is Ruler Over the World to Come
Humans Were Created to Rule Over God’s Creation
But, Because of Sin, We Never Fulfilled Our Purpose
But Jesus Did
He Became Ruler Through His Perfect Obedience and Sacrifice On Our Behalf
So That at His Return, We Will Be Able Once Again to Fulfill Our Divinely Ordained Purpose
To Be Given Glory and Honor and to Reign With Jesus
Let’s Read Hebrews 2:5-9 So that We Can Better Transition into Verses 10-13
Hebrews 2:5–9 (NASB95)
For He did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking. But one has testified somewhere, saying, “What is man, that You remember him? Or the son of man, that You are concerned about him? “You have made him for a little while lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And have appointed him over the works of Your hands; You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
The Focus is Now On Jesus’ Humanity and His Suffering
With that as the Focus, the Author is Now Going to Show Us How Jesus is Superior to the Angels…
Based Off of His Unity With God’s People
Let’s Read Hebrews 2:10-13
Hebrews 2:10–13 (NASB95)
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.” And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”
Now Let’s Analyze the Passage
Hebrews 2:10 (NASB95)
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
First, We Need to Recognize Who the Author is Speaking of Here
The Creator and Sustainer of All Things
Verse 9 Tells Us that it was Through God’s Grace that Jesus Suffered and Died for Us
So We are Looking at God the Father Here as Creator and Sustainer
Hebrews 2:10 (NASB95)
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
What was Fitting/Appropriate for the Father to Do?
To Perfect the Author of Salvation Through Sufferings
The Word for Author Can Take On Several Different Meanings
But it Carries the Idea of:
Being First, the Originator, the Leader, the Champion
Jesus is the Originator, Leader, and Champion of Our Faith
What Does it Mean that it was Fitting for God to “Perfect” Jesus?
This Doesn’t Mean that Jesus was at Some Point Imperfect
It Says, “It was Fitting for God to Perfect Jesus Through Sufferings.”
Jesus Perfected/Completed the Task of Becoming the Champion of Our Salvation…
Through His Sufferings
Hebrews 2:10 (NASB95)
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
His Sufferings and Death Were Necessary to “Bring Many Sons to Glory”
To Restore to Humanity What was Lost in the Fall
To Restore Our Intimate Relationship With Him
To Restore Our Purpose of Ruling and Having Dominion
To Bring Us Back into Being in His Glorious Presence Once Again
God, in His Grace, Considered it Entirely Appropriate to Make His Son Suffer for Us
Not That the Father Had to Make Jesus Suffer and Die
Jesus Gave His Life Willingly According to His Father’s Will
How Could God Consider Something So Horrible to Be Fitting/Entirely Appropriate?
The First and Most Obvious Reason is That He Loves Us
But Also We Find 2 Reasons in the Text
“For Whom are All Things”
We Were Created “For” God
We Were Created for His Glory
God Considered it Entirely Appropriate for Jesus to Suffer and Die for Us for His Glory
“Through Whom are All Things”
God is Our Creator
He Made Us and He is Faithful to Provide For Us
God Considered it Entirely Appropriate for Jesus to Suffer and Die for Us Because He is Faithful
God Simply Spoke and the Universe and Everything in it Came into Existence
But Something More Than Simply Speaking was Needed…
To Lead Humanity Back to God After the Fall
What was Needed…
What was Entirely Appropriate…
Was the Suffering and Death of the Perfect Champion of Salvation
Hebrews 2:11 (NASB95)
For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
He Who Sanctifies/Makes Holy/Sets Apart for God’s Purposes is Jesus
Those Who are Sanctified, Made Holy/ Set Apart for God’s Purposes are Christians
Jesus, the One Who Makes Us Holy, is God’s Son
We, Who Jesus Made Holy, are Now God’s Children
Because of This, Jesus isn’t Ashamed to Acknowledge Us as His Siblings
It Wasn’t Just God Who Considered Jesus’ Suffering and Death Entirely Appropriate
Jesus Also Wanted Us in His Family
The Father and Son Both Want to Bring Us (God’s Children and Jesus’ Siblings) to Glory
Hebrews 2:12 (NASB95)
saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.”
This is a Quote From Psalm 22
Psalm 22 (NASB95)
1-5 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel. In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them. To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed.
6-8 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, “Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”
9-10 Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.
11-13 Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help. Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion.
14-15 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.
16-18 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.
19-21 But You, O Lord, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me.
22-24 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
25-27 From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him. The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever! All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations will worship before You.
28-31 For the kingdom is the Lord’s And He rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.
This Amazing Psalm Seems Like it Could Have Been Written By Jesus Himself
There is So Much Messianic Foreshadowing
But This is a Psalm of David About a Difficult Time of Suffering in His Life
For the First 21 Verses, David is Complains and Pleads to God to Help Him in His Time of Trouble
Then in Verse 21 He Says, “You Answer Me”
Either God Rescued David
Or David was Confident that God Would Rescue Him
Either Way, Beginning in Verse 22, David Thanks and Praises God
David Promises to Praise God’s Name (His Character) Among God’s People…
Because He is a God Who Saves and is Worthy of Praise
The Author of Hebrews Uses This Text, Which is Full of Messianic Foreshadowing…
To Show How Jesus Calls God’s People His Brothers (Siblings)
He Associates With Us
Not Only Does He Associate With Us Because He Sanctified Us…
But Because He Experienced the Suffering, Pain, and Hardships That We Face
Faithful Christians Made Holy By Son of God Who was Perfected Through His Faithful Suffering…
Are Siblings to the King of This World and the One to Come
Hebrews 2:13 (NASB95)
And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”
Now the Author Quotes From Isaiah 8:17, and Then From Isaiah 8:18
These Quotations May Seem Confusing at First
What are These Quotes Supposed to Be Telling Us?
We Can’t Forget the Context
The Author is Telling Us About How Jesus is United With Us and We are His Siblings…
Through His Becoming a Human, Suffering, and Dying for Us
Jesus Experienced What We Experienced for Our Sanctification
Isaiah is a Highly Messianic Book (Messianic Prophet)
This Context is No Different Than the Rest of the Book
In the Previous Chapter, We Find:
Isaiah 7:14 (NASB95)
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”
In the Next Chapter, We Find:
Isaiah 9:6 (NASB95)
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Both of These Verses are Prophecies of the Future Messiah
And Our Text Says
Isaiah 8:17–18 (NASB95)
And I will wait for the Lord who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
Isaiah Shows His Faith/Trust in God By Waiting for Him
And Then He Says that He and His Children (Actual Children) are Signs From God
His Son’s Names Were Prophecies About Things God was Going to Do
Hebrews 2:13 (NASB95)
And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.”
So What was the Author of Hebrews Trying to Tell Us With These Isaiah Passages?
In the Context of Hebrews…
The Author is Showing Us How Jesus is United With His People
We and Jesus are From God and are Siblings
I Believe “I Will Put My Trust in Him”…
Is to Show Us How Jesus Himself Had to Live By Faith in God, Just as We Do
As Christians Must Live By Faith, So Did Christ
He We Through What We Go Through
He Experienced What We Experience
And I Believe “Behold, I and the Children Whom God Has Given Me”…
Is Another Passage Relating Jesus to God’s Children
Isaiah was Relating Himself to His Own Children as Signs From God
Jesus was Relating to God’s Children…
By Becoming Human, Living Faithfully, Suffering, and Dying for Us
Application
Application
This Text (Verse 10-13) is Building Up to Something
The Whole Point of This Text is to Say…
God, in His Amazing Grace Gave His Son Over to Suffer and Die for Humanity
He Found it Entirely Appropriate for Jesus to Become a Human…
And for Him to Experience All that We Experience…
So That in His Suffering, Death, and Resurrection…
He Might Bring Many Sons to Glory
God Wants to Rescue Us and Call Us His Children
Jesus Wants to Rescue Us and Call Us His Siblings
This Text was a Little Difficult…
But it was to Build Up to the Final Section of the Chapter
Where Everything Will Be Explained in Much Simpler and Amazing Terms
Summary to Wet Your Appetites:
Jesus Had to Become Like Us, Suffer Like Us, and Die Like Us…
To Defeat Death
To Free Us From Slavery
To Be Our Merciful and High Priest
To Make Propitiation for Our Sins
