Let’s Go: “Let Me Ask You a Question”

Mark 12:35-40; Matthew 22:41-46

I. Who’s asking the question? (vs 41)

1. Christ was patient and compassionate.

2. Christ asked questions in search of truth.

“He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken beyond healing.” Proverbs 29:1

II. What was the question? (vs 42)

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

Matthew 1:1

The Messiah was to do 4 specific things:

1. Free Israel.

2. Give Israel victory over all enemies.

3. Bring peace on earth through Israel.

4. Make provisions for all as He rules in Israel.

III. What was the answer? (vs 43-45)

The Messiah is the Lord of David.

1. David was led by the Spirit.

2. David called the Messiah “My Lord.”

3. David said my Lord sits on the right hand of God.

FAITH SHEET QUESTIONS:

1. What is the value of publicly debating theological questions? Is there value even if none of the participants change their views?

2. Why is the teaching method of Jesus uses here – asking questions – often effective?

3. What is the theological significance that Jesus is the Son of Mary? The descendant of David?

4. What part does the authorship and inspiration of the Psalms play in Jesus’ argument?

5. What is the root of all rejection of Jesus? HINT: John 3:19-21

6. Why do spiritual leaders face “stricter judgement” (James 3:1)? Is this fair?

7. How would you respond to someone who said they rejected the authority of God’s Word but they love Jesus?
