I. Introduction

Last week, Pastor Barry helped us to look at the prime directive, if you will, for the disciples of Christ.

In Matthew 28:18-20, the Lord Jesus commissioned the disciples to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

But prior to the commission, Jesus told His disciples about what it actually means to be a disciple, especially the kind of attitude and posture that all disciples of Christ must have and the basis for their discipleship.

I thought it necessary to take this step back into the Scriptures so that we can kind a check ourselves as to whether or not we are measuring up to Christ’s own idea of a disciple of His.

To do this, let’s look at a turning point moment in the life and mission of Jesus from John 12.

John 12:20–26 ESV
20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

II. Jesus wanted the disciples to be clear about his identity and mission. (vs. 23-25)

John 12:23 ESV
23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

A. Jesus’ identity as “Son of Man”

1. used to refer to Himself as coming in glory

Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Matthew 16:27 ESV
27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
Matthew 24:30 ESV
30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

2. used to refer to Himself as one who suffers to bring mankind salvation

Mark 10:45 ESV
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 17:12 ESV
12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.”
Matthew 17:22 ESV
22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,

B. Jesus’ mission was to be glorified as He did the will of His Father.

John 8:50 ESV
50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge.
John 8:54 ESV
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
John 8:29 ESV
29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
John 12:49–50 ESV
49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

C. The climax of Jesus’ mission on earth was to die in order to bear fruit for God. (v. 24-25)

1. The example of planting wheat (v. 24)

2. His example culminating in his own death and resurrection as a pattern for His disciples. (v. 25)

i. Loving one’s life will lose it.

Matthew 10:38–39 ESV
38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

ii. ‘Hating’ one’s life in this world will save it eternally.

Luke 14:26 ESV
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

III. Disciples of Jesus must be like Jesus. (v. 26)

A. To serve Jesus is to follow Him.

1 Peter 2:21 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.

B. Disciples of Jesus will be glorified and dwell with Him.

John 14:3 ESV
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
John 17:24 ESV
24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV
17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

C. Disciples of Jesus are honored by the Father.
