29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’
31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.
33 I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”
35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples.
36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”
37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus.
41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).
42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.”
44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.
45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.”
48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
INTRODUCTION:

1- Every person in the world is enslaved by sin (Romans 3:23; John 8:32).
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
2- Jesus was the sacrifice for our sins (John 1:29; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 5:21).
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
3- As we encounter Christ, he calls upon us to repent of our sin and believe in him. (Matthew 4:17).
17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
B- A life-changing encounter that makes us face the most critical question of our life. (John 1:35 – 38).

1- As we come into an encounter with Jesus, we answer his question. (John 1:38).
a. What do you want? (Τι ζητειτε). Not “whom” (τινα John 18:4; 20:15), but “what.”
What is it that you are searching for? What are you struggling with? Jesus is the answer!
C- A life-changing encounter that enables a personal relationship with the Lord of creation. (John 1:38 b- 39).

1- Jesus invites us to personally fellowship with him and know him. (John 17:3)
3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
a- Note Jesus’s response (vs. 39). “Come and see.”
b- Jesus invited them to spend time with him and no doubt He told them something of His mission, revealed their own hearts to them, and answered their questions.
c- Jesus extends an ongoing invitation to us (John 1:43). “Come, follow me.”
II- EACH SAVED ONE MUST ENGAGE IN A LIFE-TRANSFORMING INTRODUCTION WITH A LOST ONE. (JOHN 1:41-51).

45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
1- Andrew made it his priority to bring Simon Peter to meet Jesus.
a- The text states that Andrew went to find his brother Simon. The original language puts emphasis on Andrew’s priority for doing so.
“εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα”
The first thing Andrew did after his encounter with Jesus was to tell his brother about Christ.
2- Philip’s initial desire after accepting Christ’s call to discipleship was to tell Nathaniel about Jesus. (John 1:45a) .
45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
B- We should seek to use every means possible to bring people to Christ. (John 1:41 – 42). (John 1:46).

46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
1- Andrew sought (εὑρίσκει= to search and find) Simon until he found him.
a. Andrew brought Simon to Jesus (ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν). He brought him (ἠγαγεν αὐτον). Effective second aorist active indicative of ἀγο as if Andrew had to overcome some resistance on Simon’s part.
2- Philip “went to look” (εὑρίσκει) for Nathaniel, with the purpose of bringing him to meet Jesus.
a. Appears to have followed Andrew’s example.
3- Philip invited Nathaniel to meet Jesus. (John 1:46).

C- We can trust Jesus to transform the lives of people we bring to him. (John 1:42b). (John 1:47 – 51).
1- Because Jesus is the one who fulfilled the promises of OT Scripture (John 1:45).
45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
2- Because Jesus is the Messiah of God (John 1:41).
41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).
3- Because Jesus paid the price for our sins (John 1:36).
36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”
a. He was God’s Passover Lamb.
4- Because Jesus has changed the lives of other people (John 1:42) (John 1:46 – 51).
42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).

51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
a- Jesus is still changing lives today!
CONCLUSION:
Simon’s interview with Jesus changed his life. It also gave him a new name—Peter in the Greek, Cephas in the Aramaic that Jesus spoke—both of which mean “a rock.” It took a great deal of work for Jesus to transform weak Simon into a rock, but He did it! “Thou art … thou shalt be” is a great encouragement to all who trust Christ.
It is worth noting that Andrew and John trusted Christ through the faithful preaching of John the Baptist. Peter and James came to Christ because of the compassionate personal work of their brothers. Later on, Jesus would win Philip personally; and then Philip would witness to Nathanael and bring him to Jesus. Each man’s experience is different, because God uses various means to bring sinners to the Saviour. The important thing is that we trust Christ and then seek to bring others to Him.
