SUNDAY NIGHT CLASSES AT TBC
What and Why
What Is the Plan?
• Trialing classes for Term 1
• Potentially, more classes in Term 3
What About Childcare?
•
•
•
•
•
no creche
bring things to occupy your own children
books, dry snacks, colouring papers, etc.
more freedom than regular service
goal: don’t distract others in class
What room do I go to?
• depends on sign-ups
• check your texts and e-mail
Why classes? Why not regular PM services?
• different format allows for different goals
• allows for topics not easily covered in a regular service
• allows key topics/doctrines/passages to be covered
systematically and more frequently
• allows gift of teaching to be exercised
The NT distinguishes elements of preaching from
teaching.
1 Timothy 4:13 (ESV)
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of
Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
The NT singles out teaching from other gifts.
Romans 12:6–7 (ESV)
6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given
to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to
7
our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who
teaches, in his teaching;
Why classes? Why not regular PM services?
• different format allows for different goals
• allows for topics not easily covered in a regular service
• allows key topics/doctrines/passages to be covered systematically and
more frequently
• allows gift of teaching to be exercised
• allows for multiple teachers and topics
The NT chides “ought-to-be” teachers.
Hebrews 5:12 (ESV)
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you
need someone to teach you again the basic principles of
the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
The NT cautions all potential teachers.
James 3:1 (ESV)
Not many of you should become teachers, my
brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged
with greater strictness.
What’s the schedule for Term 1?
•
•
•
•
•
Weeks 1-3: class sessions 1-3
Week 4: no regular class / ChildSafe training
Weeks 5-7: class sessions 4-6
Week 8: night of prayer
Weeks 9-10: class sessions 7-8
What about a degree?
• Sorry !
• Academically meaningless certificates available upon
request"
What’s different than a regular PM service?
•
•
•
•
•
little to no singing
little to no sharing time
active learning rather than passive learning
group discussion time
some pre-class preparation
Why put time into this outside of class?
• outside investment allows for good Q&A
• outside investment maximises your total return
What is my commitment outside of class?
• Expect to spend 30-60 minutes per week preparing for
the next session
Isn’t preaching enough?
The NT experience > preaching services.
Acts 2:42 (ESV)
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the
prayers.
What do classes do that preaching through books
of the Bible doesn’t do?
• the compiling of texts on a topic into 1 place
• the organization of those texts into theological
statements
• theological harrowing
What is harrowing?
• “Harrowing is often carried out on fields to follow the rough
finish left by plowing operations.”

What is harrowing?
• “Harrowing is often carried out on fields to follow the rough finish left by
plowing operations.”
• “The purpose of this harrowing is generally to break up
clods (lumps of soil) and to provide a finer finish, a good tilth
or soil structure that is suitable for seedbed use.”

Is Jesus God?
John 10:29–30 (ESV)
I and the Father are one.”
Colossians 2:9 (ESV)
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Or, is Jesus human?
John 4:6 (ESV)
Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was
from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was
about the sixth hour.
How should we understand the 2 natures of
Christ?

The NT specifies what is to be taught.
Titus 2:1 (ESV)
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.
What is sound doctrine?
sound = healthy
= correct, free from error
doctrine = that which is taught, the content of teaching
What are some criteria for healthy teaching?
• Does it agree with what Jesus taught?
• Does it promote godliness?
1 Timothy 6:3 (ESV)
If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not
agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ
and the teaching that accords with godliness,
What might be taught besides healthy doctrine?
• things that promote fallen passions
• errors/untruths
• myths
2 Timothy 4:3–4 (ESV)
3For the time is coming when people will not endure sound
teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for
4
themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn
away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
What is the job of the elders?
Titus 1:9 (ESV)
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as
taught, so that he may be able to give instruction [lit.
encourage] in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those
who contradict it.

surface of the soil, such as to prepare a seedbed, instead of
disturbing only narrow trails that skirt crop rows (to kill weeds).”

What happens if we listen to unhealthy teaching?
Ephesians 4:14 (ESV)
so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and
fro by the waves and carried about by every
wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in
deceitful schemes.

Everybody listens to teaching.
We are all shaped by the teaching that we listen to.
Who are you listening to?
Is their teaching in keeping with what Jesus taught?
Is their teaching in keeping with what the Apostles taught?
Does the teaching you follow promote godliness?
Does the teaching you follow promote what is contrary to
godliness?
What does teaching contrary to godliness look like?
Teaching that has its source in demons.
1 Timothy 4:1 (ESV)
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some
will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to
deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
What does teaching contrary to godliness look like?
Teaching that elevates human tradition above
God’s commands.
Mark 7:7–8 (ESV)
in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines
8
the commandments of men.’ You leave the
commandment of God and hold to the tradition of
men.”
What does teaching contrary to godliness look like?
Teaching that opposes or dilutes God’s moral law.
1 Timothy 1:10 (ESV)
10the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality,
enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is

Why should you prioritise teaching from your local
church?
• You can see whether the teacher has a credible
character.
Titus 1:7–9 (ESV)
7For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above
reproach. He must not be arrogant or quicktempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for
8
gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self9
controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must
hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that
he may be able to give instruction in sound
doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Titus 1:10–11 (ESV)
10For there are many who are insubordinate, empty
talkers and deceivers, especially those of the
11
circumcision party. They must be silenced, since
they are upsetting whole families by teaching for
shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
Why should you prioritise teaching from your local
church?
• You can see whether the teacher has a credible character.
• You can see how the teacher practices what he/she
teaches.
2 Timothy 3:10 (ESV)
10You, however, have followed my teaching, my
conduct, my aim in life, my faith . . .
Why should you prioritise teaching from your local
church?
• You can see whether the teacher has a credible character.
• You can see how the teacher practices what he/she teaches.
• You can see how the teacher handles the difficulties of
life and the pressures of ministry.
2 Timothy 3:10–11 (ESV)
10You, however, have followed my teaching, my
conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my
11
love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and
sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at
Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I
endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.
