Intro

Are you ready to talk about a miracle this morning?...... Some of you are skeptical.... some of you are ready for the amen!..... Prayer is not magic incantations.... Prayer is a miracle at work within your heart.
Let’s look this morning at the next phrase of Jesus’ model prayer..... We pray like this.....
Matthew 6:10 “10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Prayer Changes things...... But what does it change?

1. The Top Priority

What does Jesus mean when he says “Kingdom?”
Definition of God’s Kingdom
a. God has dominion over all the Earth.....
Psalm 103:19 ESV
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.
b. God’s kingdom is.....
“God’s people, in God’s place, under God’s rule.” - Graeme Goldsworthy
a. Eden
b. Israel
c. Kingdom of Heaven - Inaugurated with Jesus
d. Consumation of the Kingdom at the return of Jesus in Revelation
What is Jesus asking God in prayer here? ..... the fulfiment of God’s Kingdom..... namely through Jesus himself!
OT prophecy pointed to Jesus being this King of the Kingdom....
Daniel 2:44 ESV
44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
Isaiah 9:6 “6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus spoke of the kingdom as his main teaching and ministry!
1. Jesus inaugurates the kingdom. *List from TGC PHILLIP BETHANCOURT
Mark 1:15 ESV
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
2. Jesus is the kingdom.
Luke 17:21 (ESV)
21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
3. Jesus purposes the kingdom.
Jesus reveals that his purpose is to proclaim the kingdom. Luke 4:43 “43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.””
4. Jesus declares the kingdom.
Luke 8:1 “1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him,”
5. Jesus demonstrates the kingdom.
Luke 11:20 “20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
6. Jesus deploys the kingdom.
Luke 10:9 “9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” in sending out his disciples.
7. Jesus transforms the kingdom.
John 6:15 “15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.”
John 18:36 “36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.””
8. Jesus purchases the kingdom.
Colossians 2:14-15 “14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
9. Jesus concludes with the kingdom.
Acts 1:6-8 “6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
10. Jesus returns the kingdom.
Rev 19:16 “16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

What are we asking when we ask for the “Kingdom to Come?”

1.) For evangelism to be widespread!
Matthew 3:1–2 ESV
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Colossians 1:13 “13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,”
Luke 10:1-2 “1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
J.I. Packer..... This request says.... “START WITH ME”...... USE ME FOR THE KINGDOM TO COME!
2.) For Jesus to come again!
Matthew 24:14 (ESV)
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Revelation 22:12–20 ESV
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

2. Wrestling With God

Wrestling between the extreme views of God’s will.
a. If I do not pray, God will not will it?
James 4:2–3 ESV
2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
b. Why should I pray if God will already will it?
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Should you pray then? ABSOLUTELY! The Bible clearly gives us an understanding of God’s Sovereign will.... His decisions that are over all of creation..... Genesis 1 God created everything through the power of His will.... he sustains all things.... etc.
God’s reveled Will.... what God desires from us.... Exodus 20 and the 10 commandments. We see this in the will that all men would come to faith in Jesus 1 Timothy 2:4 “4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Jesus is asking here.... we are to ask that God’s will would be done in:
He is asking the Father to reshape the hearts of every single person such that God is obeyed and glorified by men on earth as the angels obey and glorify God in heaven.
Excerpt from: "The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down: The Lord's Prayer as a Manifesto for Revolution" by R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
Wrestling between our will and God’s will

a. His Will above all else

Jesus is the ultimate example of this truth....
Matthew 26:36–44 ESV
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.

b. We are changed when God answers our prayer

Our Prayer meeting this fall..... How has God answered our prayers this Fall..... Yes, No, Not yet.....
If you were to do this exercise, what would be the result?...... Encouraged to continue in prayer!
Prayer is not a matter of changing things externally, but one of working miracles in a person’s inner nature. - Oswald Chambers
