Antiphonal (also Antiphonary). Orig. the liturgical book in the W. Church containing all parts both of the Choir *Office and of the *Mass which were sung by the choir antiphonally. It therefore included the *Graduale. In later times the Office (Antiphonarium officii) and Mass (Antiphonarium missae) portions were separated, and in current usage the word is restricted to the former book. The official ‘Vatican edition’ of 1907 is now being revised. The second volume of the Antiphonale Romanum, Liber Hymnarius (Solesmes, 1983) contains the *invitatory antiphons, the Psalter, and some fifty *responsories.
