I Will Put My Law Within Them
SLIDE 2f
31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.
SLIDE 3
33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
SLIDE 4
34 “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
SLIDE 5
Sin in the world
long before
God sent the law
SLIDE 6
God sent the law so that
the offense would be seen as an offense
Much more sin would be seen than if the law had not came
In places where God’s law has never been heard, sin is still there, just not known what the offense is
SLIDE 7
The law tells us many things that are sin
which
would never have thought to be sin
Examples - keep holy the Sabbath
Honor father and mother
Shall not covet
Bear false witness (lying)
SLIDE 8
The law has tendency to make man rebel
The evil human nature within desires to commit an act simply because it is forbidden
The law makes no one a sinner, we are all such through the first Adam
The New Park Street Pulpit Sermons, Vol. I (Law and Grace (No. 37))
“I will show them their folly by proclaiming a law so high that they will despair of attaining unto it. They think that works will be sufficient to save them. They think falsely, and they will be ruined by their mistake. I will send them a law so terrible in its censures, so unflinching in its demands, that they cannot possibly obey it, and they will be driven even to desperation, and come and accept my mercy through Jesus Christ. They cannot be saved by the law—not by the law of nature. As it is, they have sinned against it. But yet, I know, they have foolishly hoped to keep my law, and think by works of the law they may be justified; whereas I have said, ‘By the works of the law no flesh living can be justified;’ therefore I will write a law—it shall be a heavy one—a burden which they cannot carry; and then they will turn away and say, ‘I will not attempt to perform it; I will ask my Saviour to bear it for me.’
Many have attempted to climb great mountains and that route many times has lead to death, but there is usually always a pass near them. The mountain of the law shows us I cannot climb over that, but the pass, the pass of Jesus Christ mercy shows us is a better way
Which brings us to take a closer look at our title for today
SLIDE 9
“I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it”
SLIDE 10
When does God write the law on our heart?
Where was the law before?
What does the law written on our hearts do? In our conscience do? Can it be in both places? Why did God want to write the law in our hearts?
I believe we have to look at the state of Israel when Jesus came to earth
The law of Moses and law of God top priority (the state of the old covenant / they broke)
How did they break? It was sure dealt with punishment or death / handed down by priests and religious leaders. So why & how did Jesus point out the breaking of the law?
In days past churches would have mainly once a year an event called what? Revival Why would the church need revival if it has the law written on its hearts?
It explains the white flag in our title
SLIDE 11
I Will Put My Law Within Them
When Holy Spirits takes law from conscience and writes it on our hearts we surrender
When Holy Spirit takes the law from conscience and writes it on our hearts the white flag states our surrender. Our surrender that only Christ has fulfilled the law in us and paid for its offense. The white flag now restates our identity and that our identity is only in Christ alone
The question came up Weds night, was there a family of God in the OT? Those who by faith surrendered to Christ through the promise.
This why revival is needed in our lives, another word used is also a re-dedication, even someone has has never experienced this for the first time
Example saw dust in the shop
Its the surrender first and then recognition of a most powerful force through the Holy Spirit - grace
SLIDE 12
GRACE - God’s
Riches
At
Christ
Expense
SLIDE 13
Romans 5:17 (NASB95)
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one,
much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
SLIDE 14
Romans 5:18 (NASB95)
18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
SLIDE 15
Romans 5:19 (NASB95)
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
SLIDE 16
20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
“I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it”
SLIDE 17
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
