Who We Are

Who are you? Not just your name.. What makes you, you?
Who are we?
If we were to go around the room, who would you say you are? Who would you say that we are?
Some of the most epic movie and show scenes are when someone’s true identity are identified
“Luke, I am your father”
Princess Leia goes undercover to rescue Han Solo - “Return of the Jedi”
“I am IronMan”
Spier-Man identity reveals in general
Batman gets his mask ripped off
Imagine when your true identity becomes known to you… bizarre right? But relevant and possible
That’s what we’ll be talkin’ about
Notice- the title for our lesson is definitive. It is a statement. It isn’t a question.
We aren’t floating and meandering around like we’re lost like a gypsy. Like we are searching for the answer. We know it. (God & His Word)
So, who are we?
God created and designed us. He breathed His life into us.
He knitted us together in our mother’s womb.
Psalm 139:13–14 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Knitted us with His knitting sticks
We are God’s covenant people.
What is a covenant?
Neighborhood example.
it essentially is like making an important deal. They make two into one, make promises, and are spiritually charged
How is it different than rules? Than a contract?
What is a conditional covenant? What is an unconditional covenant?
God makes covenants with us:
The Edenic Covenant
God promises Adam life and blessing, but that promise is conditional upon Adam’s obedience to God’s command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:16-17)
The Adamic Covenant
God has grace upon Adam’s sin (Eve eating the fruit). God spares Adam and Eve, yet curses are pronounced on them in result of their sin (Genesis 3:16-19)
The Noahic Covenant
An unconditional covenant between God and Noah (specifically) and humanity (generally). After the Flood, God promised humanity that He would never again destroy all life on earth with a Flood (see Genesis chapter 9). God gave the rainbow as the sign of the covenant, a promise that the entire earth would never again flood and a reminder that God can and will judge sin (2 Peter 2:5).
The Abrahamic Covenant
An unconditional covenant where God calls a special people for Himself- all of Abraham’s descendants.
The Mosaic Covenant
A conditional covenant of which the blessings that God promises are directly related to Israel’s obedience to the Mosaic Law. (Deuteronomy 28, Leviticus, others)
The Land Covenant
God promises to give Abraham all the land that he can see, and the gift is declared to be “forever.”
The Davidic Covenant
This is an unconditional covenant made between God and David through which God promises David and Israel that the Messiah (Jesus Christ) would come from the lineage of David and the tribe of Judah and would establish a kingdom that would endure forever.
The New Covenant
Our covenant. So simple, so beautiful.
The New Covenant (or New Testament) is the promise that God makes with humanity that He will forgive sin and restore fellowship with those whose hearts are turned toward Him. Jesus Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His death on the cross is the basis of the promise (Luke 22:20).
Under the New Covenant, we are given the opportunity to receive salvation as a free gift (Ephesians 2:8–9). Our responsibility is to exercise faith in Christ, the One who fulfilled the Law on our behalf and brought an end to the Law’s sacrifices through His own sacrificial death. Through the life-giving Holy Spirit who lives in all believers (Romans 8:9-11), we share in the inheritance of Christ and enjoy a permanent, unbroken relationship with God (Hebrews 9:15).God wants us to be set apart of all to see. He wants everyone to see his lovingkindness and beauty through us.
God wants us to flourish. He wants to bless us.
Some of y’all are learning to drive. Some of y’all drive. Rules of the road.
They’re meant for safety
Let’s take inventory
“State of the Union”
Who are we right now?
Who is God making us to be?
Let’s be people who take God seriously. Let’s be people who take others seriously.
What needs to be done?
First, enter into God’s covenant He has given us. The New Covenant.
But how does that affect our youth group here?
Nitro Covenant. For our flourishing.
It is conditional.
*Walk through the covenant poster*
*Have them sign it*
Think about who we are as a group. Think about the journey we are on. As individuals, as a group. We want you to make it to the destination. To be lifelong disciples of Jesus who makes disciples.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Covenants are better than rules or a contract.
It puts you in the driver seat of youth group expectations
You get out what you put in
We all will bind ourselves to this contract. Students and leaders.
This is for our flourishing and benefit.
There are great, awesome things up ahead this year for us. Invest yourself to God and others here.
Don’t neglect your spiritual health, well-being and growth
