Prologue and Greeting
written by the apostle John in his exile to Patmos
a revelation of the Christ- these are not his words
to seven churches- all with their own significance
Blessed are those who hear and keep- a continual theme throughout the book
the time is near- the kingdom being talked about is at hand and the judgment is always near
Jesus in his greatness made us all that we are and will be
partner in tribulation
the first of many crazy vivid descriptions, all of which carry significance for the church then and now and forever
Application
letters to seven churches which surely were specific to John’s influence but also a perfect number likely to symbolize the church as a whole
John and Jesus through John care deeply about the church and they are going through a difficult time
all of them facing their own struggles are given words of conviction and encouragement and these things apply to us as well
Revelation can seem strange and confusing and it is so to serve a purpose in a world that heavily persecuted Christians
but the point of the book can be understood clearly that Jesus’ followers who live in and through him are not to be caught up in things of this age like those who will be thrown out
we look ahead to the new heaven and new earth waiting for us if only we can do as he has said
