I love Mondays - Biblical Teaching Part 2

Psalm 1:1 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
Blessed adj. — characterized by happiness and being highly favored (as by divine grace).
True happiness…
Being highly favored…
Comes through:
#1 Who walks not in the counsel of the wicked
Walks: (behavior) v. — to live or behave in a specified manner.
Exodus 16:4 ESV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
Counsel n. — something that provides direction or advice as to a decision or course of action.
Wicked person n. — someone who is characterized by wickedness and godlessness.
First, it means the righteous man knows how to discern the counsel of the ungodly. Many fail at this point. They do not even consider if counsel is godly or ungodly. They hear advice, or theories about their problems, and they find themselves agreeing or disagreeing without considering, “Is this godly or ungodly counsel?”
ii. The righteous man is also discerning enough to know the counsel of the ungodly can come from one’s own self. Our own conscience, our own mind, our own heart, can give us ungodly counsel.
#2 Nor stands in the way of sinners
Stands: to hold one’s ground; maintain a position; be steadfast or upright.
Way: conduct ⇔ way n. — a course of conduct.
Sinners: a person who has disobeyed any divine command or neglected any duty (whether intentionally or unintentionally).
#3 Nor sits in the seat of scoffers
Sit: to sit v. — to be seated.
Seat: a space reserved for sitting.
Scoffers: mocker n. — someone who jeers, mocks, or treats something with contempt, or who calls out in derision.
The scornful love to sit and criticize the people of God and the things of God. The righteous man will not sit in that seat!
When others are putting down Christians, it is easy to sit with them and criticize them. It is easy because there are many things to criticize about Christians. But it is wrong, because we are then sitting in the seat of the scornful.
There is a way he will not walk, a path he will not stand in, and a seat he will not sit in.
We can say these speak of thinking, behaving, and belonging. The righteous man and the ungodly man are different in how they think, how they behave, and to whom they belong.
Psalm 1:2 ESV
but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
But…
His delight: a feeling of extreme pleasure or satisfaction.
“is in the law of the Lord”
Throughout Psalms, the phrase law of the LORD is used to describe God’s entire word, not only the “law” portion of the first five books of the Bible.
The righteous man is delighted with the word of God!
What makes you happy?
What are you excited about?
If a person delights in something, you don’t have to beg him to do it or to like it. He will do it all by himself.
You can measure your delight for the word of God by how much you hunger for it.
This is why the word of God is important…

“On his law he meditates day and night”
On his word…
Meditates: to reflect deeply on a subject.
It’s hard to reflect deeply with distractions…
The righteous man ponders the word of God.
He does not just hear it and forget it; he thinks about it.
We should meditate on God’s word!
Many lack because they only read and do not meditate.
“It is not only reading that does us good; but the soul inwardly feeding on it, and digesting it.
Psalm 1:3 ESV
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
“He is like a tree planted by steams of water”
Planted: to be put into the ground (of plants, seeds, and seedlings).
A tree by a river has a continual source of water.
It will never wither away, because it is always getting what it needs.
If we are constantly needy, it may be worth examining if we are planted by the rivers of water or not.
Luke 6:47–49 ESV
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
“That yields its fruit in its season”
Galatians 6:9 ESV
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
I’m Planted!!!!!
“Whose leaf also shall not wither”
Brown, dead, withered leaves are signs of death and dryness.
The righteous man does not have these signs of death and dryness; his “leaves” are green and alive.
“And whatever he does shall prosper”
Prosper: (thrive) v. — to make steady favorable progress or succeed.
This is when I can truly quote....
Romans 8:28 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
